i was working on my truck the other night and just put an edlebrock 750 on it, and i was leaning over into the engine compartment, and my mom was cranking over the motor, she hadnt been cranking for too long and i looked over and seen my solinoid was steaming cause it was prety cold out side, and the batery side was hot, i got a burn from it, what is causing this, can i just change the solenoid or is there something deeper in the electrical system?
any help is apreciated, oh yeah, its a 79 f-150 4x4 with elecrical parts from a 77, that shouldnt make a lot of difference should it?
There is a poor connection there. The resistance produces heat when current flows thru it. The connection surfaces may just be oxidized or the cable end itself could be bad.

could be a bad starter drawing to much current. i dont think the solenoid is bad. its basically just an on off switch. i remeber when my positive cable shorted to the block on my pontiac it got so hot instantly that it melted almost all the insulation. i hurried and disconnected it and the cable and post were hot for a half hour later.
well, the starter is brand new, it has only been used in this vehicle, and the solenoid is fairly new also, i'll try making a better connection
thanks

-bad connection or cable.
The cable end can go bad from oxidation and corrosion internally between the wire and the crimped "cover" terminal. I have never liked those connections.
