Depends on the C4. The early C4's with their 24x24 spline input shaft are not a good idea for performance. In all cases, pan fill units (as opposed to case fill) are considered by many to be a bit stronger. In 1970 the 26x26 spline input shaft came out for one year only, and a pan fill version of that is considered the strongest stock unit. From '71 on the input shaft was 24x26 but these are still very good shafts. There's a truck version of this last one (post '70, 26x24 spline, pan fill, truck) that some consider even stronger, but it's starting to get rare in the bone yards.
The C4 has more popularity with serious drag racers then the C6, as the C6 absorbes more power, is considerably heavier, and has a tendacy to flex under hard accelleration. The C4 is also easier to modify for performance. I have a 'near' stock C4 sitting behind 400hp right now with no problems.
thanks alot that really helps. i am gonna be running about 550 horse at the crank so i was just wondering if i would need to get a stronger tranny or just build up that C4. i think i will just build up the C4. should i just take it to a shop and have them build it or is that something i could do at home?
