Hey guys, this morning i went to start up my truck to go to work, and as soon as it turned over, there was very loud knocking noise, and whatever made the noise also made the truck shake voilently. this is the first time this has ever happened to me. I took it out in the mud saturday morning after work at appx. 1130 am, and it sat in the garage since then. it was pouring here, and i hosed it off well. maybe some mud or a rock got stuck somewhere? the noise and shaking quickly died out and right after, i pulled it out and let it warm up before i went to work. Does anyone know why this would happen and if it could turn into a serious problem i should have fixed? thanks.
no, how would i do that? i forgot to mention after driving in the mud, i drove through a flood 2 times to clean it up a little doing like 20, then after i hosed it off in the rain, i smoked the tires and went through the puddle again. so maybe a little water got in there, i was kinda beating on it. its bone stock right now, except a k&n filter element, so how could water get in the stock intake if the flood i went through barely touched the rims? if it did, hopefully its all out and i dont end up with a big hole in my engine or have it seize up or anything. i dont want to experience it again, i love my truck.
[QUOTE=oneofakind97]no, how would i do that? [QUOTE]
Like I'm supposed to know what you did with your truck???
All I know is that you said you "hosed it off well" and that could mean anything. For all I know, you could have opened up the throttle body and flushed it out with water too.
yo pal, i was just asking if there was a tell tale sign that i had gotten water into my engine. You dont have to be a complete ******* man, im not an idiot and i would never intentionally put water into my engine. Later d-bag.

The exact same thing happens in my 96, but only if you start it up warm. It starts up perfectly fine from cold (hasn't been run in a long while) and idles fine.
I have to gun the gas (full throttle) while it continues to buck and knock, and eventually it comes to life, then idles normal (and runs normal for the entire trip).
No clue! But I will hopefully know soon when it makes it into the shop.
If you got water in the intake you may have seen a big cloud of blue-white smoke out the exhaust. Maybe there was a little water in the dist cap also.
If its stock, alot of the little vacuum relays under the hood could fail from water, especially the EVR ( EGR valve regulator.)
roushians, i was starting mine up cold when it happened. it was in an air conditioned garage at like 5:50am. it only happened in the time it took me to say what the f***, then it ran fine on the way to work, and didnt have a problem since. when i start it up warm, it kinda sounds liek it turns over a little too quick. its tough to explain, but ill try. i had a new starter put in a while ago, but when i turn the key, instead of normally turning over, it cranks, then almost jumps to life. its weird, but i usually just let it warm up for like 2 minutes and everything is fine. i didnt see any big cloud of smoke come out the exhaust, so i guess no water got in the engine, but today, while attempting to put in my intake (which didnt fit anyway), i saw alot of small mud chunks under the hood, so maybe there was some on the serpentine belt. But Roushians, if you do get in the shop and it is some sort of problem, please let me know. i would appreciate it. thanks alot guys.
Oneofakind97, I wouldn't have asked about the water if it weren't a sign, but rather than be a real ***** and maybe see your engine blow, I'll keep trying and we can forget you called me those names.
Drain your oil (replace filter) and check for water, antifreeze, or gas. All three will can give these symptoms as they can wash off the residual oil which is what protects your engine at startup.
Water: you'll typically see white-ish or milky colored oil, check the fill cap too; as the water vaporizes it tends to condensate their and you'll see it milky on the bottom side of the cap.
Coolant: If you can't readily see it in the oil then keep an eye on your antifreeze resovoir, if it starts loosing coolant and you don't see a leak then its internal and the cats can absorb alot without seeing it at the tailpipe. Antifreeze in the oil can kill your engine fairly quickly and typically cause by head or intake gaskets/fractures
Gas: Hard to see in oil but you can plainly smell it. It's typically caused by rings, fuel injectors, head or intake problems.
Since it seems like it turns over too quick to you, I would do a cylinderpressure test, check for pressure balance between cylinders and how well the hold pressure which is the more important test in your case.
