From what I have seen and heard, peoples memory of a bad storm lasts maybe half a generation.
Not sure which is more amazing - the number of people who move to the southern coast who seem to ignore the probabilities of hurricanes, or the cost of housing and how much prices have escalated in some of the Florida markets this past year.
Regardless, some prefer occasional hurricanes over annual blizzards.
move to texas, sunny year round, no blizzards. and we only catch the afterthoughts of a hurricanes if it even makes it this far west....most usually don't. we could use some rain though. been since late may since we had any rain.
And for gosh sakes, don't even think about the Pacific Northwest! Rains too much, we have earthquakes and volcanoes. I understand Kansas is real nice this time of year.

And whatever you do, don't move to Washington, DC!
Too much wind from the 'windbags' on Capitol Hill. (Just kiddin'! Oh my! I hope I didn't cross the line, there.)
I mean. . . . we already have too many tourists!!! Traffic is bad 24/7/365 and worse on holidays!
Storm stories. . . .
If it rains three drops - - - traffic becomes snarled. Gridlock.
Snow - - - The operative word is, "Abandon your cars NOW!" (And that's after three flakes have fallen. And haven't even stuck to the ground!)
I just went visited the new Cabela's store they just opened up down here near Ft. Worth and while I was there we aparently had a storm hit but this store is so huge I couldn't tell. it made the lights flicker a few times. but when I came outside there was trees down and debres everywhere and my truck was all wet :-p go figure.
We're still waiting for the next big one here in Corpus Christi, Texas. We've had a few close calls lately to remind us that we're still on the dartboard, but we are WAAAY overdue for a direct hit (so the weathermen tell us.)
Last major hurricane to hit Corpus directly was Cat. 5 Hurricane Celia in 1970, the two reminders we had were Cat. 4 Hurricane Bret in 1999, and Cat. 1 Hurricane Claudette in 2003.
Gonna get some plywood this weekend and pre-cut boards for all the windows as I remember the mad dash to do this when Hurricane Brett was coming this way.
Markgilmore1322, that link you have posted directs me to the Library of Congress website.

It's suppose to hit 105 degress just outside of here.
Call it a heat storm.
Not for me. I'll take the 60 degree temp over here in the city.
