was told by my mechanic that the little cylinder on top pf my passenger side valve cover is a vacuum amplifier. it is conected to various vacuum lines and then is coneected to my egr valve. he said that with this part being bad, my egr wont work. he tried to locate a new one but said that they dont make them anymore. what am i to do? the local parts stores are complete morons and they cant even give me a straight answer on anything.

Time to go junkyarding. Even if it's not the same size engine, you can find the same emission gizmos on similiar vintage trucks. Once you find it, see if you can get more - those will become priceless as scarcity increases. I'm always scanning for stuff like that, most yards won't charge much either..tough part is finding them.
I had to have the same thing last year when I had to smog my 1975 truck. Mine was missing when I bought the truck. The Ford dealer had the part but it was something like $90 bucks! They are a dealer part so most auto parts stores won't have any listing. I can't understand why your machanic can't find one at a Ford dealership. You may have to bite the bullet on this one. I got lucky and found one at my local pick-a-part for $5! But they are hard to find at the wrecking yard. Good luck!
