Both pneumatic pistons (if that's even the right term) are shot and that big door is a bear to hold up while I try to fetch something. Does anyone know of an aftermarket or used source for them? The part number or proper terminology would be cool too!

Avoid the used ones. Any good aftermarket auto parts store has these in stock or can get them overnight. I've seen these for ~$25 and up each.
BTW, I used to use a cut off broom handle to hold up the door on my '91. (A beater) but the '93 (my good van) will get replaced if and when they ever get lazy.
Stop killing yourself and spend some change on replacing them.
Just thought I would bring up a dead thread sense one of my lift supports went out. That is the correct # and man do they make a difference. DO NOT BUY MONROE! I originally purchased a set of Monroes, When I installed one, the metal bar bowed and the plastic broke. Took it back and went elsewhere for this brand. They went up in price a little bit ($18.99) but man it makes a difference when it is pooring out and you have one arm holding the liftgate up and the other trying to unload a cart.
And it does require two working ones. One is not strong enough to hold up the liftgate.
I picked up a set at the local salvage yard last weekend for about $15 for the pair. It's kind of hit-and-miss with salvage yard parts, but a good way to tell if these parts are usable is to see how they perform on the vehicle in the yard. If they lift up the tail gate quickly and require some effort to close, and they have no oily residue where the shaft goes into the body, chances are they still got some life left in them. My current struts are junk yard specials that I installed about 3 years ago. I don't really need to replace them yet, but since I was there, they seemed to be usable, so I thought I'd pick up a spare set.

Without knowing exactly what design car/truck you have I'm going to make a stab at it. Assuming the mechanism is the same as what is on most Ford's-a screwed in mount with a push pin contact. You can easily open your "trunk" and look to see if it is making contact with the "trunk" since the mechanism is on the body. You might find out that it is misaligned and a simple "bend" is all you need. Lastly-if that doesn't fix it chances are you simply need to loosen the jam nut and bring the plunger pin more out slightly (the inner pin that is small) so that it is a taller height to make the contact it needs to shut the light off by completing the circuit.
Please be more thorough on here. Guy's aren't trying to be "smart" just want to be helpful with the correct information. Good Luck.--boz
thanks bos,,,its a 2001 ford focus and the "door open" light on the dash stays on until l slam the trunck lid a couple of times,,something aint making contact, l dont think there is a light in the trunk and l dont see no switch like in the older cars...
Gary-keep checking. there has to be some kind of a push button electrical connector either on the trunk lid or on the body when the trunk gets closed. How else would it be possible? Trust me-its there. Might even be right where the trunk lid claps shut at the lock mechanism--Boz
