When will ford every put a I-6 back into it's line up? It could be gas or diesel as long as it is a I-6. Less moving parts, naturely balanced, 7 main bearings, lots of torque down low, whats not to love. I know many want high rpm/ high horsepower motors and by no means am I saying get rid of those style motors, yet there is a market for a long lasting/ high torque motor in ford's line up. Bring back I-6 please!
Well that's an excuse for me to get an F750. I6 baby!!!
That's what's wrong with people these days. They don't know that a high output motor with small displacement will not last. Plus all they want to do is go fast.
So there high RPM small motors will wear out faster and aren't as simple to work on.
The mass of people buying vehicles are idiots to how they work. So all they see is bigger numbers.
Give me a slow turning 175hp IDI diesel that will last forever. Or a 300.
dt 466 you got that right. Even the large V engines have gotten to a point that they are high rev'ers. Eventhough I'm not a V fan, the 6.9/7.3 idi are great motors. They produced their peak torque @1400 rpm which at one time is what diesels where know for, something clearly lost on the high rev'en, high spoolen, 6.0. I just wish that ford/ IH would switch to a I-6 for there new 6.4 diesel that they are coming out with.
One need only look at the Mercedes E320 oil burner or the BMW gas I6s and wonder why we must suffer with buzzy V6 gas and overweight V8 oil burner motors.
I copied this from an earlier post regarding diesel competion:
"Check out Road and Track June '04, page 43. MB E320 CDI. High pressure direct injection 3.2 liter motor, I6, fits under the dainty hood of their sedan. Makes 201 hp at 4200 rpm. Makes 369 lb-ft of torque at 1800 to 2600 rpm. Sounds like it could be a light truck motor to me.
25 to 31 mpg in a 3850lb car. How would such an engine run in an Explorer?"
Even if you added 1/2 inch stroke to it, I would probably still fit under "the dainty hood of their sedan", but imagine what the torque number would be.....

I hear you, I have two pickups, One with a built 300, and the other with a 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel. The Cummins is Basically the 300's big brother. I have the 12 valve out of a 94-98 Dodge, which is purely mechanical, no computers whatsoever.
If you look at my gallery you can see some nice pics of me pulling my 360 V8 out of my 72 F100. There was nothing wrong with it, I just don't like 8 poppers.
Ask a kid what a I6 is. Not to many at my school know. Most of them has never seen one.
My race truck's got 8 for 1/4 mile speeds only.
600hp is nice. But it has it's place and it knows it. 10 flat and it better damn get me there or i'm junkingit for a 300!! Not bad for a ranger.
Or the kids at my HS that I went to. Most of them Hadn't heard of an inline engine other than the one in their honda. Those that had heard of an inline 6 Called them V6's. Because V is apparently the letter that you use so people know how many pistons it has. Sort of like the V4 in the Honda civic. My Favourite comment is "Nice straight v6 man!"
Even kids in my Grade (Class of '03) are too young to know about such a "wierd" engine. Nevermind the fact that they were used until '96.
Yea i know of a few that refer to them as V4's. One of them says when he gets his turbo it will be a V5. So i asked him that hitch is rated at 12k or 14k? Obviously he didn't know V5 was a trailer hitch rating. I hope he isn't installing that turbo him self.
It's good to see there are still inliner's out there.
My grandpa came to visit and i had just put in my 3" straight pipe.
He said" It's damn nice to hear a real engine again" he though it sounded like the Buick I6 in his T bucket from back in the 50's when hot rodders still used I6's
