I added FlowMaster '40' single in dual out and a K&N FIPK to my truck and I am now getting about 2 MPG WORSE than before. i did the mods to improve mileage and it has backfired on me I know the first thought is well keep your foot out of the new power, and I thought that for the first tank but made a conscious effort to keep it steady for the 2, 3, 4, tanks. My only other thought is to pull the battery wire and reset the computer for the new airflow??? It is not giving me any codes.
PS The cat will rattle a little when cold, maybe something is clogging???
In some cases, aftermarket intake kits can screw up the transfer function and cause the motor to run richer or leaner. I test drove an 02 with exhaust, headers and Airaid kit and it was a friggin' pig compared to the bone stock 01 I eventually purchased.
The rattling cat could just be a loose heat shield...I'd check that first before cutting and replacing one of those.
Quick question....if the MAF is really an issue (dirty, malfunctioning, etc.), will unplugging it show an immediate and observable (drawers on the seat kind) change?

Some (not all) aftermarket air filters change the way the MAF reads the incoming air which can alter the transfer function, and the motor will run leaner or richer.
You will not gain anything by disconnecting the MAF, it'll actually make the motor run worse.
Right, disconnecting it was not my idea a some kind of permanet fix. I was under the impression that it changed the PCM's operating mode. So, for example, if you had pinging and disconencted the MAF and the pinging went away then there was a good chance the MAF was at fault. However, if the pinging remained or got worse, then something else is the issue. I have heard something along these lines, but never seen it personally.
If you put on an aftermarket intake cold air or not does the mas air sensor not see a larger/denser air charge and the pcm calculate a longer pulse from the injectors. Therefore colder and or larger air charge = longer injector pulse which = more power and less savings.I have never seen how denser air fuel charge can possibly save on gas.Same goes for the exhaust.Ford has already sucked every mpg out of your trucks setup at the expense of hp.
jcstratt: yes it is possible for it to change. If cleaning the MAF doesn't help, sometimes rotating it 90* at a time can help remedy some airflow issues.
