I like the Shindaiwa because they're durable as heck. I love mine. Also they are pretty darn powerful..... for a weed-eater.

Installing heavier string may not help any. I tried that with my weed whacker and the little motor just couldn't get that fat string spinning as fast, so it actually was worse at cutting.

Okay, I've narrowed it down to Stihl, Shindaiwa, Echo, or Cub Cadet.

I'm still leaning toward the Cub Cadet I saw at Lowes for $170. .105 guage dual-output string, 1 HP engine, and strait shaft.

ON EDIT: It's the CC 3075 Model, with a 25CC engine.

You want a STIHL! My dad has two of them and they work great. He can even use bldes on them for small trees. But the one you would probably need might not be able to do that. I have a STIHL trimmer that has a curved shaft and it is great. I can use it on my grass at only half throttle.

You can't go wrong with a straight shaft STIHL.

-Matt

P.S. They might cost a bit more but they WILL last FOREVER!

I have $100 saved up right now for a 'whacker. Well, I have a couple thousand in the bank, but I'm trying to build up my weed-whacker fund from money I get from cutting grass and such, therefore I won't be wasting my truck money.

I'll get out someday to look at prices at a tool rental place, and a high-end tractor store a couple miles away.

We had an echo on the farm for years. It was a straight shaft, had a regular line head and also had a wood cutting blade. I can't tell you how many small trees I cut down with it plus general weedeating around all the barns, sheds, etc. on the farm. If I was buying a weedeater today it'd be an Echo. I'm sure they're all pretty good though if you get 1. a large enough cc engine and 2. straight shaft.

We have 2, a Ryobi 31cc trimmer with the grass gator head that we use for weeds and around the yard. Then there is the Troy-Bilt straight shaft from Lowes with the 4 stroke Honda engine. It's used to cut blackberry bushes but I'm in love with it. Doesn't hurt my back and doesn't stink. Idles smooth and even though its 26cc it has more power than the Ryobi. The Ryobi won't start anymore (as of last week) and I doubt it will get fixed any time soon. The Ryobi was maybe $140 and the Troy-Bilt was closer to $250. And the Troy-Bilt comes with a 4" metal blade for brush removal.

I do not know why I did not think to mention this earlier, but besides Shindaiwa I should have said to check out Kawasaki. I do not have any first hand experience with them, but I know a lot of other commercial guys like them. My next edger may in fact be a Kawi.

I was just looking on ebay and there is a dealer selling Kawasaki KTR27A trimmers for "buy it now" $175 plus 26 shipping. I have dealt with the seller before. In fact I have bought many things from them before I ever saw them on ebay. They are a big power equipment dealer out of Chicago, Russo Power. That trimmer has a 26 cc engine rated at 1.6hp and ways in at 10.8 lbs, just a little heavier than out Shin T230's...but with about 50% more power. I actually was looking for one in the 22cc class but stumbled upon that one. That is a deal on that machine.

I just bought a 4 cycle Troy-Bilt from Lowe's and love it. Plus I don't have to have 2 different gas cans for my mower and weed whacker since I don't have to mix gas anymore.

The thing about a 4 cycle is that I'd forget to check the oil. That can't have a good result.

I've narrowed it down to 3 brands: Echo, Stihl, or still the Cub Cadet.

I talked to my dad about it. He told me to run our current Homelite 'till it dies, then we'd split the cost of a good 'whacker.

I just realized today that our Homelite is .065 guage. I almost cried when I realized that my dad got almost the cheapest model Lowes sold.
