Extended cab trucks. WHY?
. Almost all the bed in that thing is behind the rear axle. You couldn't possibly properly load it. Hey, here's how to get most of the yuppies out of pickups: ban automatic trannies in pickups :-). That would sort out the real pickup drivers from the yuppies. However, in all seriousness, they have as much right to drive pickups as I do. Still I liked it a lot better in '77 when I got my first pickup. Then most pickups were owned by people who really used them and used them hard. Then everyone considered me a redneck, just because I drove a pickup :7. Anyways, I always have had a short bed as I don't haul much very often. And then weren't most of the early pickups, such as the classic '56, short beds? Anyway, the longer wheelbase of the long bed pickup or extended cab/shortbed does give a better ride.
Amen on the yuppie's, these are the people you can blame for the $30,000 pricetags on new pick ups, they are also the people you can blame for your trucks car like suspension and underbody, they are also the people you can blame for all the extended cab 4x4 shortbox pickups, they are grocery trucks for soccer moms who are on a power trip and want to be hip and trendy
No, I don't think so, even though I do have a 95 short bed 4x4 reg cab. BUT, it sees its more than fair share in the mud, and on the trail. Also, I do some hauling with it (somedays I wish I did have a LWB). Biggest complaint about a short box is in the winter, bad handling in snow. But, if I go slow, it is ok.
One last thing, is that I hate seeing all these automatics now.
Don't get me wrong, autos are fine, but when the time comes too look for a new used truck, I would like to find some varity!
Mine is a 5 speed, and I would like to keep it that way.
I often wondered what happened to LWB extended cabs as well. I can only think of 6 or so that I have seen since the new design in 97!
Speaking of extended cab, am I the only one that thinks that the chev extended is way disproportional? I mean, looking at it, it simply does not look right.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
I have an 89 F-150, regular cab, 8ft rust bucket and a 95 Nissan King Cab. The Nissan nicely fits wife, 5 year old and boxer hound. But if I haul anything heavier than a bicycle, my headlights nicely illuminate the tree tops. The Ford hauls but Bruno has to ride in back.
I guess it all depends on what you need. Personally I'm starting to wonder if I should sell them both and look for an E250 van."Are Yuppies taking over"
Yes. Last night my neighbor informed my wife and I that we can longer have our tiny backyard cookout because it fills his ENTIRE house full of smoke. It was 75 deg and sunny. I'm wondering why he was sitting in the house to begin with. I'm afraid to argue with him because I'm probably breaking about 300 laws created by yuppie politicians.
I just hate to see F-250's configured that way. It polutes the future used truck pool for the rest of us that like full size trucks!
But Ford is obviously giving the public what it wants. And they are the ones buying the new trucks.
Actually one of the neatest trucks I ever saw was a crew cab dually that had the crew cab replaced with a regular cab. Then part of a second truck bed was used to extend the bed forward up to the back of the regular cab. So it looked to be at least a 10' pickup bed and it was a well done modification.
Now THAT'S a TRUCK!
You find me a vehicle that can comfortably fit five (I am 6' 300#s), is easy to park in downtown "insert city here", can pull an 11,000 pound camper or trailer, can have a yard of topsoil dropped in it and can haul around enough 2x4s and drywall to finish my basement, and I will be happy not to "pollute" your used truck pool. I have driven everything from a '76 f100 with an 8' bed (300,000+ miles on it when I sold it) to my '01 F-250 SD, CC, Short Wheel Base and everything is a matter of comprimise. I gave up the turning radius of the regular cab for the room for my family to actually ride with me on family trips (a novel idea, I know). I have still not found anything that I cannot haul home from the local lumber yard (so I leave the tailgate down to haul 8' lumber). I think that the manufacturers have provided a product that can now be usefull to many more people then they used to be. Just remember, about the time I sell my crew cab, YOU might actually have a family that you want to take with you (and it SURE BEATS THE HELL OUT OF BUYING A MINIVAN)

Also, different turning radius? A Supercab LWB would have a greater turning radius, but a shortbed cc? Isn't that built on the same frame as the reg cab longbed? If so, it has the same turning radius.
Point taken.
Since my family is grown, I guess I'm fortunate not to have to make any compromises.
You are to be commended for your choice over a mini-van!
(BTW: Don't try to haul an 11,000# camper or trailer with an F-250)!
;-)

The 250 SD with my configuration is RATED for just over 11k (fifth wheel)and the '02s are even higher, I don't like pulling close to the limit so my trailer is just 7400#s ;-)
I went the way of the minivan once (shame, shame, more shame, sometimes we all have moments of weakness) and much prefer the truck. :-)

You probably do have plenty of room for YOUR family in your xtended cab. I, however did not. At 6' 300#s I am one of the smaller of the men in my family/friends (topping out with my nephew at 6'7" and 375+). My statment was to point out that those of us who might be forced to buy something less then what we want are happy to see that the manufacturers have listened to us. As far as turning radius and size goes you may want to check your facts:
A regular cab longbed LIGHT DUTY is about the same length as the LIGHT DUTY (f-150) xtended cab shortbed. I was, however, referring to the SUPER DUTY CREW CAB. The SD CC does have the same overall length as your light duty 150 but is built on an entirely different frame that is wider and has a bigger turning radius. Had I purchased the long bed I would have been a full 18" longer then you and I believe 4-6" wider.
I do commend you on your ability to park in town. All bragging aside I am able to do it to but it ain't fun. I have no desire to add another 18" on to the size of the parking space I need by buying the long bed. Once again coming back to my point about giving up some things to get others. At least we both can agree that we do own 2 of the best trucks available today (or any other) and at least we are not driving ch#vys...
;-)
BTW I checked MY facts and the SD is only .6" wider (8" more hip room inside though) then the 150. So I stand corrected (or sit in this case)
