Hmm... try glasspacks first, that could be loud enough. I cut my cats cuz it was just not loud at all... besides, my area doesnt check for cats or emissions.
If you want loud go true duals and glasspacks if you can get away without cats. Anywhere before '96 can have the O2 welded into the passenger's side pipe and it will run fine. Also add some 4"x24" tips to the tails and that will deepen it up a bit.
Better talk to local police station as a "random" caller and don't leave any info about your vehicle though. Just ask what sound laws are in effect and how stringent they are on them. Used to nobody here cared about loud exhaust.. well, I've gotten pulled over.. 4 times just for exhaust being too loud in the past about 8 months. But I'd try to go with glasspacks first, or if you want to spend a little bit, a high flow cat and then like flow 40's or even 30 series.. but the 30's are for race applications only.
I have headers w/cats on my 1983 351W 2bbl. They run thru a pair of glass-paks These exit to stainless tips that exit under the back bumper on either side. Inside the truck, the noise level is acceptable. I didn't think it was really loud. The other night, I had a friend drive the truck for me. I LOVED the volume of the sound. Its good and loud. If the truck came with cats, your best bet is to bite the bullet and keep them. If you dont have emission checks in your state, you probably will soon.
We are just getting all of this stuff here. Used to cost $9 to get an inspection. Now, on 1996 and newer, its $32. They are looking at all vehicles to be sure that there is nothing amiss on any cars. I had a good time proving that I had 2 cats on my truck. I bought those $50 cats at Autozone.
I just got an IMCO Extreme 1-chamber muffler installed on my truck. It sounds absolutely savage and is loud as hell. I only have a 4.6L and it's louder than my neighbor's Dodge Ram Hemi with true duals.
if they only check to make sure you have a cat and dont do any emmisions testing, then just make a dummy cat. Bust all the baffles out of it, then put a piece of exhaust pipe the same OD as the rest of your exhaust inside the busted out cat. no oe will ever know but you, and you will get nice flow and noise from it.
