Does anyone have the specs for toe in on a 97 explorer? The darn Haynes manual has only a few paragraphs on what toe in, camber and castor are. I would really like to put the finishing touches on the truck I just saved from the junk yard.
Also, does anyone know of a good site that steps you through a toe in adjustment and/or steering wheel alignment? Last time I did one was on a 92 Kenworth, I am betting its a little different and I don't want to miss anything!
Dave, the Explorer alignment procedure is the same as on the Kenworth, you just use smaller tools.
My 2000 (97 would be the same), manual says toe-in specs are +.12*, with a positive limit of +.25*, and a negative limit of -.12*.
What this means is about a 1/16" to 1/8" toe-in is optimum, measured from the rear to the front of the tire.
As to centering the steering wheel, that's done by lengthening and shortening the tie rod ends. If the steering wheel needs to be moved to the right, then the left tie rod needs to be lengthened, and the right one shortened. (And vice-versa.) You do this by simply loosening the lock nuts, and turning the rods in and out, equally on both sides.
