I just bought my 2001 exploer XLS V6 a couple of weeks ago with 88,000 miles, and noticed that while sitting while started the engine isnt very smooth sounding. I havent filled the gas tank yet but I am today and add somt gas treatment to see if that helps. Anyone have similer situations let me know.
I resolved this problem by installing a new fuel pressure regulator. The most common solution seems to be installing a new IAC. Others have mentioned fixing this by replacing a sticking EGR valve.
I think if you simply unplug the vacuum line from the EGR valve while idling you should be able to tell if the EGR valve is causing it. I'm not sure how to tell if the IAC is the cause without a OBD code. A Ford mechanic told me that fuel pressure regulators rarely go bad, so I suppose I had bad fuel or something.
Since you are new to this, you probably don't have a computer code reader. GO to Autozone or the like and they can do it for you. Even if you don't have a CEL on, if the guy asks say yes. We need to know what the computer is think before we can point you in the right direction. Otherewise 20 different things can get changed by guessing and you still have the problem. Could be as simple as plugs or plug wires or as complicated as a bad torque converter.
I had the same problem & found this message board 2 days ago, was advised to clean out the iacvalve with throttle plate cleaner and it idles like brand new. My check engine light never came on so it read no code. A can of cleaner cost 2.99, so you have a small investment into a possible fix. Dubbz
I still have the same problem and I have to even come close to getting it fixed so I wish I knew what to tell you but if you come up with anything that works please let me know. I also have a question for you does your explorer have advance trac and are you having any speed sendor problems
