Texture paint for rough firewall

My firewall had about 50 extra holes in it. I finally got it all welded up and started grinding all the welds smooth. I hammer welded some of the larger ones trying to keep it flat as possible. I'm getting tired trying to get this thing perfect so I was thinking of something with a texture. Anybody got any good ideas? Something that will last for awhile.

I just finished putting Herculiner coating on my 51's firewall, underside of the hood, and on the running boards. I'm happy with the way it turned out, my grandson loves to get on the running board and slide down the rear fender to the ground. When we go out to the garage to work on the truck he tends to get side tracked. At least now I won't have to touch up the paint on the running boards each week.

Wurth makes an underseal that they put on the lower sides of body panels of Camaros and Firebirds and cars as such.

It works real good.

It's called Wurth High Build Underseal.

I just used the Duplicolor spray on bedliner to coat my running boards. Absolutely love it too, the texture is not lumpy like undercoat, but it is textured enough to hide some imperfections. Think it'll look pretty sweet with my polished aluminum step plates bolted on.

Thanks guys, all good ideas. Are all these coatings flat black or do they come in colors? I was thinking of something I could spray the body color over.

Scott, does the Duplicolor come in a spray can or do you need a spray gun?

It's in a spray can, in the automotive section at walmart (where they have bondo and touch up paint) is where I got it. Not cheap, about 6 or 7 bucks a can, but it sprays on very nicely. You can also get it in a quart can and with a special loop roller roll it on, I assume the texture would be the same but have no experience with it. First coat you pretty much do full coverage, and second coat after a few minutes you hold the can further back so it textures it up a little. I used 3 1/2 cans of the spray, but I did the underside as well. On just the tops I used exactly 2 cans. It's only one color, sort of a low low gloss black. I'm not sure if it can be painted over though, will have to look at the can again. I'm going to paint the truck gloss black, I thought the running boards being the body color might be a little too much. This stuff makes them look more rugged, like they belong on a truck.

I used SEM 39853 Texture Coating to restore the texture of the metal dash of my 57 Bird. It is a black lacquer based product in spray can that leaves a rough grain finish. I sprayed this over Omni 2-part urethane primer and topcoated with PPG DBI Deltron 2000 paint. It worked really well. I am planning to spray the headlliner in my 60 truck with this to get the same leather look and then repaint.

I used Herculiner on my bed. Rolled it on after cutting in the corners using a sponge brush. Worked great. I plan to use it under the hood and running boards as well as inside the fenders instead of undercoating. It is easiest to find in the standard black, which dries to a satin look. It also comes in red and grey.

Duplicolor offers many other colors, though. I haven't seen it in the roll on in colors at the usual outlets. Search for their website. You could probably get a near match to the truck exterior color.

Just a thought here. I had the same problem, I got a piece of stainless, polished it and used body shop type glue to attach it over the existing firewall. Total cost about $100.
