hello all. I have been checking posts and I don't see one quite like mine prob. I have a 2000 F150 XL V6 with 96000 miles. my abs light came on about a week ago. my digital odometer also blinks out occasionally and comes back within a few secs. the speedometer functions properly all the time. Fluid levels are fine and I just had a brake inspection. I read forums mentioning a rear speed sensor. could this cause all my probs? I am trying to avoid the dealership. any suggestions?
Could possibly be the speed sensor. It's not uncommon for them to go, and I think they're inexpensive. This being if you do not have 4 wheel abs, then it could be in the front, but not as likely. I don't know about the odometer part.
I have a 2000 2WD and when my ABS light came on, it was the speed sensor on top of the rear diff. The sensor was less than $20 and about 5 minutes to change. The hardest part was crawling under the truck. Take it to an Autozone, if you have one where you live, and get them to scan it for you. They will do it for free provided you have a light on. I don't get the blinking odometer either.
If you change the sensor, be sure to reset your computer after changing it. Unplug the battery for 10-15 minutes.
If your still having the odometer problem after that check the sticky at the top of this thread, you may have a cold solder joint that needs resoldering in the dash, very easy fix, i just did it myself last week and has been working great since.
My recent speed sensor change was a nightmare of sorts.
I didn't set out to change it - just to clean it off (a 22-year ford mechanic suggested it, and it makes sense to me as these sensors are often coated with magnetized particles, and this can throw the sensor off - the sensors all aren't 'bad' per se, just confused)
The thing -should- just pull out, but mine was stuck in the differential hole. a bit of careful prying, and I got the very top of the speed sonsor off with the bolt-tab. Along with it came the guts of the speed sensor.
Next, I got a mid-section of the sensor, leaving what was now a plastic 'cup' below top of the diff, and still down in there.
Having just changed the diff fluid, I really didn't want that mess nor expense again for this stupid little part... and I had a meeting with a very special girl the next morning, so I was running against time and luck.
This, of course, being late on a Friday, I thank God above that there was one Ford dealership open late down in the city. A little mroe than an hour later I had the new sensor, but still had to get the old cup out. This is yet another example of why I love 'spreader' pliers (pliers that push out when you grip them instead of closing) - I got lucky and found our one set of pliers and eventually worked the cup out.
The new one barely went in, too, so my hole must be out of spec. Oh well.
thanks guys. went dealership and bought part for $20. It took about five minute to ut on and the light went off. I still don't know why odometer was blinking so I will keep you posted.
