Twinkie twinkies? Not here, I would like some non-stock rims, but I can't seem to find an 'industrial/futuristic' look that I desired and I sure as hell don't want another pimp-mobile (but if that's your thing, that's fine too).
So, I still hope I'll run into Chip Foose one day.
To answer your question...I have 22s on my truck and I wanted to salvage some smooth ride so I went with a 305-45-22 which gave me more sidewall (the "45") and in turn a very smooth ride. I bought top-of-the-line Dueler HLs for my stock wheels and I really couldnt tell the difference in the non-winter months. I dont go off-road (nor do I live in Virginia) and enjoy a nice looking modified truck--so plus sized rims are great if thats what you want to do. One of the better upper/mid priced tires would be a Falken or a Nitto (about $300 each), these are readily availble in many sizes and have high traction & good heat ratings. A popular tire, the Pirelli Scorpion Zero ($250) will give you a tight ride on turns and such but they wear very quickly, you will likely be replacing them in about a year. As far as the rims go, typically a decent rims (not imported) will run you about $250-$350 each depending on the style and brand. Hope this helps.
go to tirerack.com and you could 'sample' how your ride would look with the different sizes of wheels they have, and contrast it with stock. Be aware - 305/45VR22 tires might rub a little in front bumber, requiring a little trimming. Also, 22 generally don't look good on tall vehicle imo, unless you plan to drop your ride. They have reasonably prices 20" Harley at tirerack, you may want to check that out as an alternative - 20" tires are generally more reasonably priced.
I got my 22 wheels and tires (you can guess where) on close-out for around $2100 shipped. I dropped my 99 4x4 XLT w/ LLS by 2" all around and installed 4 new shocks (oem front, belstein rears) and I am pretty pleased with the improved handling. Plus they look good imo.
This is funny! I got 20" Momo Vantage's that came on my 4x2, and I want to sell these rims/tires and put some off-road type wheels/tires and a 2" Daystar lift. Some want to drop and street out there 4x4's and some want to lift and off-road out their 4x2's. To each his own. I think the 20's look decent on the truck but I go snowboarding all winter and to the ceach all summer and I need better traction and clearance, so the 20's gotta go.
I went with 20's, as I wanted a nice 50 sidewall..same ride only smoother, as I got better tires. As far as off road..why and where would you take a truck like this off road...or do you mean dirt road? lol I'll tak me my TJ or Cherokee for the fun times. This truck is a highway cruiser hauler with 4 wheel for inclement weather. Check out http://www.wheelsforless.com/ they have amazing deals...and are great. I run the American Racing Prisms with Hankook tires (100x times better the OEM). Here is a pic.
Well, I don't neccessarily go "off-roading" but I do go up into the mountains in winter and there are some really crappy roads up there. Alot of times you can't even tell what you are rolling into until you hit it... rocks, huge potholes, basically anything that gets covered in snow. And on the beach, forget the street tires! If I tried to drive into the sand with this type of tire, I'd be getting pulled out by a Chevy... no way! So for me a bigger volume tire is almost a neccessity. Ideally a 315/75/16 if it will fit.
