1971 Ford Explorer "E"

This is my truck (or the way it was when my father took delivery in November 1971). It was a leftover '71 a couple of months after the '72s were out. Few people seem to know this package existed. It had "Custom" emblems on the bedsides, rather than "Explorer" as later ones did. In fact, the only place the Explorer name shows is a small badge on the glovebox door.

My father believed in basic vehicles and this was about as close as he could get. It was a 3-speed manual, no radio or power anything. It did have a 302 V-8 but he would have preferred a six. The package had an odd combination. To my knowledge, all other '71s had a chrome front bumper standard but this one was painted. It didn't have door jamb switches. On the plus side, it did have the drip rail molding and the seat was the same vinyl with multi-color cloth inserts used on all Explorers that year.

Over the years, I've changed to a 351W, C-4 automatic and power steering and brakes. The cab is now on a rotisserie for cab mounts and a Classic Air conditioner. I'm going to paint it back the original Lime Gold Metallic but add trim, probably at the Sport Custom level.

Just thought this might be of some interest.

1970/72: Chrome front bumper standard equipment on Ranger/Ranger XLT, Custom/Sport Custom came with painted bumper.

Door jamb switches only installed if optional courtesy lamps are present. My purchased new 1971 F100 Ranger XLT came with them, but I don't recall if they were part of a package.

Does it have hubcaps, 'exclusive Explorer' wheel covers or?

To verify if your truck came with exclusive Explorer seat upholstery, post the BODY code stamped on the Warranty Plate.

After winter passed by, FoMoCo offered all sorts of Springtime packages, plus the dealers would put emblems on vehicles that never had them in the first place.

L/M dealer I worked for in the 1980's: Sales Manager 'gussied up" some plain-jane Sable 4 doors by adding chrome rims and (exclusive to Mark VII) LSC emblems to decklids. The C referred to Coupe!

For a fee, you can get a copy of your trucks original build sheet from martiauto.com

Could we see some pictures? Here is how.

But I got ta say becoming a supporter is the fastest and easiest way to post pics right from
your whatever pad/cell thing or home computer.
Few of us look in the users Gallery or album as you can see by your recent visitors.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
The best photos and videos | Photobucket

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

It's locked away in a friend's shop so I can't get to the warranty plate, but the upholstery looked just like all the brochures I saw for the nicer Explorers. It had argent-painted dog dish hubcaps on white wheels.
