Axle swap, maybe

I have a line on a set of axles for my 92 F150. I want to regear it (running 33's with 3.08). The axles I have a line on are from a 88 3/4 ton fire truck. I have been told they are a full floating axle and the neighbor figures we can put them on my truck quite easy. The 88 currently has an independent front suspension (similar to the F150). My question is has anyone ever seen these axles before and would the swap be worth it. I can get the whole truck for $500.

What are the axles under the 88? Are they the regular D50 front and D60 rear? I would say the gears could be around 3.55-4.10s and if they have 3.73 that would be perfict for your 33" tires. They could fit with some mods, like the shock mounts might be in the wrong place, and you would need to use the drive shafts from the 88 and hope they would fit in your transfer case, etc...

The drive shafts are the wrong length, I would have to get them redone (the 88 is a supercab long box and my 92 is a reg. cab long box). The gears are 4.10's, which is OK as if I do the swap, I will put a lift in at the same time and run bigger tires.

The neighbor thought the axles were D60's, but he wasn't really sure, the only thing he was certian on was it was a full floating front and rear end (not sure what that means but he said it was a good thing for a toy truck)

I am still in that debating stage as to if I want to do the swap or not

Is the front solid axle or a TTB front suspension set up?

The front TTB set up in either a D44HD or D50 will not fit the F150 chassis with out some work. The mounting points for the F250/F350 TTb axles are different than the F150. For that amount of work you may as well just do a straight D44 axle swap and have a better set up.

If your thinking of just unbolting the 8 lug parts you can for get about that because they will not swap with the 5 lug stuff no matter how much fab work you do.

What RTM said is right, go with a solid axle conversion D44. But if you try to go with the 88 axles, you would have to use the 8 lug parts and just get some tires for a set of 8 lug rims.

If it is a solid axle it's a D60 like your neighbor said.

Sounds like either way it is more work than I want to get involved with, so I think I will pass on the truck. Thanks for the input
