Hi. My 79 F100 (automatic) started making a knocking noise today as I accelerated -- and the knocking increased and decreased by how much I accelerated or left off the gas. I can't tell for sure if its coming from the front end or the back end. What could this be and is it a big (costly or important to the overall functioning) problem?

Is it a dull knock, loud knock?? Sounds like it may be a rod or main bearing. Go over your engine well and see where it is coming from. Which engine do you have? Miles? well maintained, beaten, etc..

Its a dull knock, the exhaust basically drowns it out. Its a 302 engine and I don't know anything else about it (didn't inquire to the previous owner much about anything I'm afraid).
Well let me ask this? Did you fill up with gas right before it started knocking/pinging? If so you got some bad Go Juice and or the timing is just a tad to high for the octane of the fuel you just bought.
BB.........................
if you are still unsure where the noise is coming from, the first priority would be to narrow it down. "knocks when you accelerate" so does it knock if you are sitting still and just rev the engine a little? you may just have a bad U-joint in the driveline.
