I've been running a solid lifter 427 cam in my 390 Mustang for years. The engine has 90,000 miles on it and I switched heads on it at around 80,000 miles, pulled the lifters out and inspected them and put it back together. No wear issues.
Also, the need for more than 92 octane depends on cam choice as well as cylinder head choice. Aluminum headed engines can run upwards of 11.5:1 compression on pump fuel with no detonation problems (depending on cam specs.). It all depends on the combo. My combo will run fine on pump fuel. Generally 385 series engines don't have oiling problems, in fact there are oil system mods that help the oil get back to the pan sooner. With a high volume pump at high RPM's it's easy to empty the pan.
I've done a lot of research on my combo and the guy that is doing my heads is the 385 series guru. He has many dyno proven combos that use pump fuel.

i dont plan on runnin mine on the road no more well unless a quik trip to the store a mile down the road once and a while is conciderd a whole lot of street drivein thinkin about a 514/c6 combo i already have the tubs and a narrowed 9" from another project i bought years ago from a kid.down here theres a guy that drives a 48 f1 and snaps of 11sec flat then drives home i just hope while puttin this together i still remember them lil tricks from the ol'days
I'm just saying, it's NOT impossible. Mine runs on 92 octane, and I drive it to the track. I'll admit, I don't drive it very often, and only on dry pavement, which rules out about 10 months of the year up here in the Northwest.
Fun Ford weekend is coming to Bristol this weekend. I'd love to go see some of those run. They usually have some nice trucks. Lots of em are lightnings though. To push a '60's truck to the 11's how much hp are you running?
By my trap speed and ET, close to 600 at the flywheel. The catch is, I only ran it in the 1/4 mile 3 times. The first time was getting a feel, and then they put an end to my night after I ran my last run because of my lack of a roll bar.I was just under the 11.49 limit.
Hey FordBoypete down here in Nawlins (New Orleans) we actually have a gas station where you can pull to the pump and get 105 octane...........there is only one station with one pump but there is one here. Let's just say my blower loves the stuff and cops give me dirty looks everytime I pass by.
