H.O. Engine?

I've been in the market for a crate engine, and was thinking of going with a HiPerfomer made by S&S. The enigine is listed as "Windsor, HO, dipstick in block, Non Roller cam." Will this work in my application (1990 5.8L)? The thing is, I don't know if my engine is an H.O. (high output) or not, and was wondering if an H.O. would work with the E40D transmission. Talking to a Jasper Dealer, he told me it wouldn't work. Anyone got ideas?

Thanks

The truck fuel injection should be "batch" or "gang" fired, which means that all four injectors on each bank fire simultaneously - the fuel/air mix is sucked in when the valves open. While not as refined as mulitport sequential (where injection is matched to the valve opening) it will run either the HO or non-HO firing orders. I have the stock gang fire injection running the HO 302 (which has a 351 firing order) in my truck, and it runs fine. SO long story short, the truck fuel injection doesn't care what firing order the engine is. If you upgrade to the mass air setup(which I think are all sequential), then you must be careful to match the engine's firing order to the fuel injection. Your current fuel injection should support either Ford Windsor firing order just fine.

Thanks Cheggie. Anyone got any semi-low budget H.P. upgrades to have the engine builder do before shipping? I was thinking performance heads and cam shaft, pending the upgrade cost. I'm looking to stay around $2k, $1200 being the base price already. Thanks all.

for a 5.8ho uses same firing order as a regular 5.8. the 302's used different depending on HO or not.

That motor is setup more for hi rpm use and probably better suited for a car. I suggest you look into getting your engine rebuilt , run compcam 35-255-5 , headers, and get the e7 heads worked over a little and youll be a happy camper. all of these mods will run just fine with your stock computer setup.

a 96 would be sequential mass air obd-II to learn more go to www.fordfuelinjection.com

and its not gang but batch fired for speed density.

I put a H.O. in my 88. I also got mine from S&S, although I have a 302. The engine is just fine for a truck, as long as you use the truck intakes. I am very pleased with the power of this engine and the quality. I have had it in for a year or so now. It came with a 7 year warrenty. With shipping and all it came close to $1600. There are some pics of my swap in my gallery.

Cheggie, I also am running the 351 firing order. Down the road I want to upgrade to mass air becasue I want to run a supercharger. Are you saying that I need to get a mass air setup for a 351? I am not sure what to buy. I never thought about the firing order being different. This is all too much for my little brain to think about!

Kameronth,
I'm getting ready to do the mass air upgrade to 302 HO Bronco. I already have the wiring harness and computer from an 89 Mustang GT, which has (of course) the HO 302 with the 351 firing order - different from a standard 302 truck firing order. In essence, I will have a Mustang engine and mass air sequential fuel injection setup. Fortunately, HO swaps are very popular and harnesses are readily available. It has to be from a Mustang - Crown Vic's and trucks have the old firing order, and the sequential EFI will not be happy with it. Expect to pay 200-300 dollars for a Mustang GT computer and harness. I'm modifying the car harness to integrate with the truck harness - the biggest difference will be the injector wiring. Fordfuelinjection.com has the Ford engine wiring harness diagrams, which makes it a little easier. To make this a nicely engineered swap, I'll be breaking open the 60 pin eec-IV connector and removing pins to install the fuel injection harness. It'll take a couple of weekends I imagine. Most of the Bronco 5.0 sensors will talk to the Mustang computer, so they'll stay put. Also, I have to have a bung welded into the driver's side exhaust pipe for a second O2 sensor which the truck does not have.

What about the kits from Ford Racing, do you know if they make one for our applications? When I upgrade to it, I would like to go new with the whole kit together.

I don't think Ford makes a kit for this application - the mass air kits they have are for converting cars that are already sequential. However, there are companies that make kits that are complete and ready to bolt in - like Windsor-Fox. This is more expensive, but you can buy a complete kit with tech support if you'd prefer.

This was the one I was thinking about, I don't plan on buying it until down the road, but I just was wondering if it would work on my engine.
