I have a 93 F150 with a 4.9 engine. For the last 4 years I have had to replace the starter about every 10 months. Is this a problem on this year of truck or the engine? Does anyone else have this same problem?
Stop buying the rebuilt starters and buy a brand new one. I went thru the same thing, even with supposedly higher quality PepBoy units, and now that a new one is on her I haven't touched it in 3 years.
Are you sure its the starter? A weak ground system will give simular problems since starting is such a high current job. Clean your grounds if you haven't done it in a while the nextt ime the starter seems to be acting up.
I agree with you Tim, but where do you find new ones? A stealer will charge you an arm and a leg, but I am not sure where else to get one. The one on my 93 F-250 with the 460 looks brand new but I have hed to replace that one twice now on a lifetime waranty. In the past I have had fairly good luck with reputable local rebuilders.
My local parts stores show they stock both new and rebuilt in stock so it seems they are still available, you just might have to ask for NEW instead of lifetime warranty.
I paid $160 for mine 3 years ago, for what its worth.
Make sure the surface the starter mounts to is clean. It grounds through this connection. I was having problems with Napa and Autozone starters and then went to the dealership and got one. No problems since. It was about $150 plus core.
2 cents..ford starters with that sheet metal cover on the selonoid used to be sealed with a cork gasket...that warped, broke, shrunk from exhaust heat, etc. Then I came along , wanting to keep things clean,,and would wash / hose it off. soon I would have bad selonoid.. after three or four starters/ and I got real fast at changing them/ a parts guy told me to seal the selonoid housing with silocone....and no more problems from the replacement...could have just been luck, but the selonoid is something that could rust inside. good luck..
