I am having starter issues with my 97 F250 7.3. The starter was weak and seemed to be dragging. It struggled to get enough revolutuions to start the engine especially in the am. The batteries were five years old so I suspected the issue was there and replaced them. However the problem remains. Before I replace the starter is there anything else that may be causing the problem?
Do NOT replace the started. First pull off all of your battery connections, frame and engine grounds, starter connections and solenoid wires. If you have air and a die grinder you can put a 3m scotchbrite pad on it and clean all of the cable ends down to nice shiny copper and put them back on. If not you can use sand paper.
If it's still acting up after that then check the 2 screws holding the starter solenoid on. They like to back out sometimes and do this. Just tighten them and go on.
Also check the solenoid on the fender. The screws securing it to the fender need to be clean and tight. It grounds through them.
If none of this works then take it off and have it rebuilt. Don't ever buy a new one. rebuilt junk from Mexico almost never lasts as good as your original.
If all the connections are nice and tight, I would say take the ten minutes and take the starter off, run it down to O'riellys and get it tested. I just bought a starter from them yesterday. Can't go wrong with a lifetime warranty.
till it breaks out in the middle of nowhere! I picked up some parts from them last month, got home, tore my truck apart, discovered they gave me the wrong stuff AGAIN and was screwed. I really hate anything aftermarket. I have installed a lot of aftermarket starters, alternators and power steering pumps that didn't make it a year but never once had one go bad that either I rebuilt or a local shop.

That's what I did. The solinode was bad on mine so I ended replacing the starter as well as I didn't know how old it was. The new starter itself turned the engine over a lot faster....
