HPOP My mechanic can't redo o-rings...??

Developed an oil leak over the last weekend, normal driving 88K miles (out of warranty due to years). Mechanic says the HPOP (high pressure oil pump) is leaking and that there is a poor track record of success when the o-rings are replaced and the customer usually ends up having to replace the pump so he recommended replacing the pump now and saving the extra labor charge ($187 to replace the rings or the pump). This doesn't sound quite right to me though he hasn't steered me wrong yet (have only been using him for about a year now). They have ordered the pump but it won't be in for another day.... any suggestions or comments?

I've replaced HPOP o-rings on several trucks with no problems. I definitely wouldn't change out the pump if it's working, and it's not that hard to do yourself. Just my 2 cents.

I heard from my former employer that some HPOP develop hairline cracks that O-rings will not seal. Also, some of the exchange pumps(from Ford) are "brand new" in a "rebuilt" box. There aren't enough rebuildable cores available. Would have to remove the pump first and determine if it can just O-ringed.

Have changed many o-rings without having the pump leak. You may not need to replace you pump, Navistar has a kit to repair the leaking pumps. Part# 1843716c92
You MUST remove the pump to seal it.
Good Luck
