Have a 67 with 302 with a electical grimlin that's been bothering me for a while. Its like some one turns the key off at times. It can happen 2 seconds after starting or 2 hours. I had a Mustang with a resistor wire go bad once and it behaved consistently. It would just quit after 20 seconds. This is random. Sometimes it goes a week without giving a problem and then I'll get a week where I can't get it out of the drive way.
Its usually hard to start. Once it does start, the longer it runs the less likely the grimlin shows up. If it does, the truck usually restarts easily, especially if you wait 5 to 10 seconds. I suspect a bad wire somewhere but have not found it. Replaced ignition switch with no changes. One wire on ignition switch plug looked like it was half crushed once with some insulation damage, but the wire looked to be intact... Moving this wire around does not help. Thinking about changing out whole harness if I can't find grimlin. Any advice. Thanks
Welcome to ( FTE ) and I would first off check (all the grounds)! My old 65
was having the same problem years ago and it was a broke wire on the
firewall where the big plug and all the wires come though the firewall. May be
worth a look to see!
I would check the coil with an OHM meter right after it died when it was hot. Considering coils are only $10 brand new it might not be worth the effort.
Like someone else mentioned, check the grounds.
What you might want to do is everywhere (coil and starter relay) there is an elbow for the electrical connection, replace it with a eyelet and screw the connection down. I do this on all my vehicles including the ALT connector.
On the coil wire, splice in the middle and hold it together with a well lubed vinyl covered spade connector (M/F) so you can yank the wire apart in case your engine will not shut off from advanced timing etc.
i doubt the gears my 69 ran with 5 teeth missing off my cam gear. Ran like a champ to.... untill it stop right where the five teeth were broke so no connection between the cam and crank gears. I would check the coil, maybe next time it starts doing this to u maybe run some cables from the battery directly to the coil try to bypass wires who knows maybe then u can start to narrow down the possibalities of ur gremlin hiding in a wire.......Good luck keep posted on how you doing
What condition is your distributor shaft and bushings. I had a similar problem. The distributor was so worn that it would cause intermitent point gap or no gap. The clue was it seemed to occur more often when I was turning left.
