I just put my system in my 79 f 150. I had this system in my other pickup 2 years ago and it worked fine. Now i have what you call "alternator noise" i guess. There is a whine that changes loudness with the engine rpms. If the engine is off it is ok. So first i checked my ground off of my amp and it is good. I can make it a lot worse with a bad ground but could not lessen it by switching the ground. I had the cd player in it last year and just put the subs and amp in it. Well i think i traced the noise down to my rca cables. The white rca cable is what is causing it. If it is dissconnected there is no noise and with it connected there is no matter if the red cable is connected. One thing is my new cd player has 4 outputs and my old one had 2. So i have 2 splitters on the amp because that is how it said to do it. The splitters are not making the noise. So according the the amp manual i need to get another set of rca cables and eliminate the splitters. Will this stop the noise? Or do i need to get 2 new sets because the old cables are not good anymore? I had no problems with the system in my old pickup.
I found an extra set of rca cables laying around (i think they were for the dish network receiver) and i eliminated the splitters and this did not help it. For some reason whenever either of the white rca's are plugged in it whines. If both are plugged in it gets louder. I messed with the gains i believe you call them on the amp and i lowered them and all that did was lower the noise it did not get rid of it. If i turned them up all the way then the subs would thump when the volume was all the way down. Also the speakers crackle sometimes too. One difference from when i had it in my other pickup is i used bananna plugs to connect the speakers. It says to use them and has the connections for it so i decided to use them this time instead of directly connecting the wire. I did not have them on there in my old pickup i just directly connected the wire too them. Could this cause the problem? I dont know a whole lot about systems so i am trying to figure it out and describe everything as best as i can.
are your power wires and your rca ran sepparatly? if not then the power can induce a signal into the rcas causing whine. you can also by a electronic noise reducer and put it inline before the amp on the power wire.
also i forgot to say that the amp has a crossover built in. I have it off but if you turn it on the noise gets louder. I will try messing with the wires before i get an electronic noise reducer.
i have the rca's and power cord away from each other and still no help. I just dont know what to do. I dont think it is the ground cuz i can make it worse with a bad one and i can get the speakers to thump when the volume is down on a bad ground sometimes also. maybe the white rca plugs in the amp are bad? I dont think it is the rca cables. I never had a problem with it in my old pickup and i had it in there for 3-4 years. It sat around in the basement for 2 years. Any suggestions? tomorrow i may try new rca cables and noise reducer. The cd player wouldnt cause this would it? I have had 6 1/2's hooked up since i put in the cd player and have never had noise in them and still dont. I may try that though because i do have the cd player and something else grounded together. Im gonna go try that and cross my fingers and toes.
ok i messed with the cd player ground and that made no difference. I did get it to stop by hooking the power cord to the amp up to a seperate battery with nothing else connected. Does this help pinpoint or narrow down the problem for anyone? Will a electronic noise reducer on the power cord make any difference since i got the latest results? I do have my power cord, cd player, auxillary lights, and tach power hooked up to the battery is this ok or do i need to worry about this? Never had a problem and had a similar hookup on my old pickup. Can anyone show me what a noise reducer looks like that i could pick up at radioshack?
To the bolt on the positive battery terminal, the post on top. Would the positive battery cable be able to cause this? It was replaced with a cheap one someone picked up at a hardware store that isnt really right for the pickup.
ok i found a thing at crutchfield to help diagnose the problem http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/le..._diagnose.html and according to it i need a power line noise filter. http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/p....asp?I=003S15A Does this sound right to you guys? because when i connect rca's like they say in step one it goes away, then i disconnect the rca's from the cd player and there is no noise, then i unplug the antenna and still have noise, then i remove the cd player from the dash cavity and still have it, so it says the noise is being picked up by one or both of the receivers power leads and to put a noise filter on one or both of the leads. So do i need two or can i get away with one? the same rca's were used in the system before in a different pickup so i dont think that it is them making the noise.
picked up a ground isolator to see if it would make a difference and it is now completely gone. No noise at all. I tried all kinds of grounds and the isolator cleared it up right away.
