I have a 77 Ford F-150 custom 4 wheel drive with a straight six 300 engine. A friend and I have recently rebuilt the engine and I am now using it as a daily driver. A past owner replaced the gas tank with something out of the junk yard. I need to determine which gas tank was on the truck when it was built. The mechanic I talked with told me he found six different ones that were all used in that year and can't tell which one is the correct one. Does anyone out there know and able to tell me how to identify it?
Also, I am having the exhaust manifold replaced because it is badly cracked. The repair place wants 375 for the manifold and another 3 or 400 for labor. Can I get a better deal on a manifold anywhere?
Where do you get a steering box? <edited by moderator for content>
$375 is outrageous for a manifold. Go to a junkyard and you can probably get a good used one for around $25. Asked the front desk guy because they may have one already pulled and on a shelf somewhere in the back.
Definately!! Is he selling you a gold plated manifold??? That's outrageous. Might want to go buy a socket set and replace it yourself too. His labor is unbeliveable :-staun

I think he is trying to tell you he does not want to do the work without refusing to do so. Find another mechanic or do it yourself. In order to drive one of these older vehicles you need to be able to work on them yourself. There are too many little things that must be handled with TLC on these old vehicles for a normal mechanic to spend his time on.

That Mech is on the crack pipe. Find another shop. Like 78f250lj said, got to a wrecking yard and find a replacement. There out there just gotta look. Shops like that really pi$$ me off.

A lot of shops don't like to work on these old vehicles due to the "Own It" syndrome. It seems many owners will come back with another problem after the initial repair and claim that "the mechanic must have done something to it". I have seen this all too many times since our older vehicles seem to have continuous "problems"...
Take my advice and go to another shop. The "high quote" is a perfectly normal way to "turn away" business that you don't want unless of course they want to pay you a price worth your time and possible future trouble...
