I have a 97 4.0L pushrod (not SOHC) engine. The refrigerant fill port is near the heater hoses running to the heater core, passenger side. The fill port is (on this engine) is attached to the accumulator/dryer. The recharge hose will only fit this quick-connector properly. If you are unsure or nervous about DIY have someone show you where to hookup or help you, refigerant is under pressure even when it is low.

91 originally had R-12 refrigerant. Unless it's been converted to R-134, you'll have a difficult and expensive time finding R-12. On some R-12 systems, the low pressure and high pressure connections are identical, although I believe the Explorer uses the smaller thread on the high pressure side. If it has been converted properly, it will have quick connect type fittings, and the low pressure will only hook to one of them. Now to answer your original question, the low pressure connection will be on or near the accumulator (receiver/dryer). If you start at the compressor and follow a refrigerant line to the heat exchanger on the front of the car (condenser) and then on to the fire wall where it enters another heat exchanger inside the car (evaporator) that is the high pressure side. Then the line comes out of the evaporator into the receiver/dryer and back to the compressor. That is the low pressure side. The pressure will go from high to low via an orifice or and expansion valve at the entrance to the evaporator.
