hey all, my truck has been running a little warmer than normal lately.
my water pump is going out to. it is making a rattling noise when running, and i can feel some play in the fan blade.
do you guys think some of my cooling woes would go away if i changed out the water pump? (im gonna change it regardless, just curious)
thanks
Your engine will run warmer on hot days than on cold days. The 1977 Truck Manual says not to worry about the temp as long as it stays with in the [NORMAL] band that is indicated on the gauge. If your water pump isn't moving enough water then your engine will overheat.
The water pump wont normally fail to pump water untill it start to leak badly. An exception might be the cast iron styel impellers that can rust away. If you have play in the shaft you could be headed for a nasty surprise if the fan assembly comes off.

I concur on the water pump pumping enough water...
But it needs to be replaced soon anyway, before it pukes coolant or the bearing fails and leaves you stranded...
Make sure you have a fan shroud. The stock fan location is too far away from the radiator to cool without the shroud.
Change your coolant, if it's been more than two years, and go 50/50 on the mix.
What thermostat do you have? 180 always worked for me.
Check radiator and make sure it's not partially clogged.
a fan shroud eh? thats a good point that i never even thought about. did these old trucks come stock with those? i dont have one, i might have to go junkyarding. and yes i was planning on flushing my radiator soon, its been a couple three years or so.
My '74 highboy did, if that's any indication. When I ordered one from Ford in early 90's, they special-ordered TWO before I finally got the one I needed on the third try, so I would imagine at one time, they had it.
If you can't possibly get a shroud, moving the fan closer to the radiator is the next best option... spacing it out, in other words...
dennis-carpenter.com. They carry fan shrouds for these trucks as well as about every other part that you could ever want. and most all of it is made on orginial ford tooling that they bought from the factory. give them a try. I got one from there and it fit like a glove.
I have a '79 f-250 that has a huge rockwell rearend on it. i took off the fan shroud and it overheated everytime i got it out in the woods. i put the shroud back on, no overheat. the reason i mentioned the huge rearend is due to the fact that with that huge rear and the 4 back tires all being full of water, we dont ever get it over about 10 mph. so it is all that creeping around, without the shroud that made it overheat. by the way, it is a 400cid engine with manual trans.
just thought i would share that little story.
alright, thanks guys. would anyone else agree with krewat that 180 would be the way to go? ill go hunting for a new shroud. i looked at dennis carpenter, but it would load the 73-79 section, ill try later.
