The whole whole shooting ballons with roman candles thing sounds like something I would do...drunk! That wasn't the brightest thing to do in the world I will say that. The dumbest thing I've done with fire works is lighting a Morter shell and waiting till there is about an inch left in the fuse and throw it. it came down and it shot right into a pond and blew water all over the place. Now I just leave them in the cannon.
people like that is why we cant buy real fireworks here in ohio.
Sad....Just too sad. Some people. sheesh. Just imagine how many more senseless accidents there would be if access to these bottled gasses weren't controlled and distributed as strict as they are. Hope the kids recovered ok.
I can't believe acetlyene had the votality to blow like that. Man......can't believe with that kind of overpressure anyone was still alive in that cab!
Acetylene is very unstable and very sensitive static electricity Just a small static spark can cause a violent explosion. This guy really was an idiot!
I saw one of the pics up at the welding supply shop. I have also seen firsthand the power of acetylene in that sort of situation. At one shop I worked at, the standard method of torch lighting was off your cigarette. In tech school, the instructor hoisted a garbage bag semi-inflated with acetylene into a rather sickly looking tree behind the school. He lit the toilet paper wick, and the bag EXPLODED blowing nearly every leaf off the tree. I remember he said, in case anybody's wondering, that's why the tree looks like that, I do this every year. Nothing was singed, no fire, just a big boom.
It said the other kid in the truck was his nephew, and the blast blew part of his face off requiring 30+ stitches to sew it back on. I guess the kid won't be allowed to hang with Uncle Stupid any more...
Reminds me of the Redneck's Famous Last Words, "Watch this!"
There's a welding supply shop next door to my work, up on top of a hill. The main door to the shop faces our yard. A couple weeks a go one of the idiots that works there lit off an Acetylene balloon right in that doorway...just a few feet from all the cylinders stored there. Good thing none of them had leaky valves. -TD
