How much money do you want to spend? What are your expectations? Do you mind installing (at a minimum) an amp? Will you be buying a new head unit, or sticking with the stock unit?
If we know where you want to go, we can help you get there
My stereo sounds flat at times 04 f-150 Im not against an amp but i don't know how much of a diff it would make I'd like to keep the head unit and as far as money goes i don't know mayb 500
The speakers are probably pretty good from the factory. I know the ones in my '01 windstar sound better than most aftermarkets... It's the head unit that is the weak link.. Those factory speakers are rated for something like 300 watts max and probably around 60 or 70 RMS. I know I can push just about a full 55 to mine with very little distortion.
if your speakers are 5x7 or 6x8 all way around, i would go with the Cadence ZX681, i had a pair in my ranger b4 i sold it and they were clean loud and awsome. Better than JL,Alpine, and MB quartz. I love em. check out their site.. www.cadencesound.com
I can't help it. I don't want to get into a big debate about stock speakers vs. aftermarket, but I can't just let this go. To say that stock speakers in a Windstar are better than "most" aftermarkets is so wrong it's laughable. To make a statement like that leads me to believe that someone either doesn't have ANY experience with listening to ANY quality speakers whatsoever, in which case they should NOT be making recommendations, or they can't hear. Sorry if this comes off as a bit harsh, but it burns me up to see statements such as this on a forum that is supposed to be for sharing reliable, helpful info with each other. This ridiculous comment could be very misleading to someone who didn't know any better. And stock speakers that will handle 70 watts RMS. Please, give me a break. I can't help but wonder where this crap comes from. It has to be made up by someone somewhere because it's completely false. I apologize for the rant.
Linear you are soooooo right. Thats like saying stock exhaust is better than aftermarket. Someone needs to listen to real speakers and not paper cone, cause if you think paper cone sounds good.....wait till you hear a REAL speaker , with poly or carbon fiber. It is 2005 man.
25 watts???? I can push a lot more than that to the factory 6x8s on my windstar.... I've got a pioneer 50x4 deck, and I can go almost to full volume before it starts to even distort.... Did I get some sort of factory freak?
IMO after changing the HU THEN the the door speakers a couple weeks later with high end Orion speakers... the stock speakers are not bad at all, the weak link is the HU change it, it's easy to do. And secondly a sub and amp will add more sound quality than just new door speakers.
I've done this 3 times now, once in an explorer I put in $50 pioneer speakers they sounded worse than stock, then in a 03 SCrew with $120 JBL's sounded a bit better, this time with $200 Orion speakers the mids and highs do sound better but the bass is no better, so I added a sub made a huge difference.
Time 4 will be in this order HU then SUB then door speakers as last mod.
So all that blabber considered to answer your question if it is speakers you are detemined to change buy TOP end ones!
pfogle, your headunit is only giving 18 watts if that RMS to your speakers. If you would replace your speakers and put an amp on them you will see what everyone is talking about. Cant be cheap if you want good sound.

I beg to disagree. There are plenty of places you can go to find a great price on stereo equipment. Just go to a local car stereo shop and let them know how much your "willing" to spend. The things they may show you probably wont be the top of the line, but who cares if your getting last months model anyways.(Changes like every 3 months)
Things you will need
A decent 4 channel amplifier
New door speakers
Head unit w/ pre-amp output
Someone to install...or a free weekend to do it yourself.
I spent like $600 on my set-up and I enjoy it very much.
