Well then fellas, how do you go about overclocking a PC? sounds like you're milking it for all it's worth.
Ryan
It depends on the motherboard and processor. Intel boards are locked, but most other brands do support overclocking. Some AMD processors are also locked. You also need decent cooling as overclocking will produce more heat. I try to keep my CPUs at 35-40 degrees, but they can go up to 60 degrees.
The motherboard has to have the options in the bios to allow it to overclock. All the brand name PC's like Dell, Gateway, HP, and so on dont have these types of options. Plus not every aftermarket motherboard supports overclocking. There are alot of settings that go with it, bus speeds, multipliers, voltage, memory timings. Of the boards that are made for overclocking there are some that are easier to and do better than others depending on the Chipset of the motherboard and the cpu type. Some chips clock better than others also, depending on the date of manufacture and core type and other things. Then you have to have memory to support the higher clocks and cooling to combat the extra heat. If your really interested I can pass on some web sites with more information.
EDIT: Intels have the multiplier locked, not the front side bus though. AthlonXP's had the multiplier locked on them after the 2500 series, but the mobiles were totally unlocked. On the Athlon64's the multiplier can be changed down and the htt (front side bus) can be changed. The AMD FX series chips are totally unlocked.

You have to go into the BIOS. Should be under Frequency/Voltage/Clock settings...something like that. I had to remove the FSB override jumper, but I think most dont need that. I was surprised to see a 50% increase in speed.

The newew Intel chips can actually be unlocked as well. Mine can, or the motherboard allows it (forget which) but I don't use it. I'm abusing it enough running the FSB at over 900MHz. I will keep an eye on my cooling and if I can keep it near 45 the way it is now I might release the lock and go up one more notch.
Thats right, I forgot that the new 775 intels can be unlocked by the board, I know Asus does it and I think Abit does also, not sure about any of the others.
With a Compaq I would be very suprised if you had the settings to change anything. You go into the system bios at startup. Right after you reboot it will say press a key to go to startup, I believe thats F10 on the Compaq's. Then look for an advanced setting that will change the front side bus, thats about all you could do with those.
before I go wasting any of your time, and as I continue to hijack this thread, here's my PC setup
Compaq Deskpro
Pentium 3 933 Socket 370
512 MB SDRAM
I don't think you will be able to overclock that system. No prebuilt systems will support overclocking, not to mention bad cooling in those cases. You might want to ask over at forum.pcmech.com
yeah, F10 is the system startup bios. thanks for letting me take this thread over on an overclocking discussion. I'll go to another website for further assistance.
OK I'm a PC gamer use my system to play COD, cod UO bf vietnam, and some others and my newest game Bf2.
This system has a few years on it, but
FIC AU13 Chameleon Pro
Athlon XP 2200+
ATI 9800XT VId card
1 GB PC2700 DDR Ram
CD-rw/DVD rom
CD rom
80 GB 7200rpm HD
VP171s viewsonic lcd monitor
Full ATX tower (so plenty of room)
Also I use round IDE cables (next Mother board going to have sata)
probly not impressive, but Its mine and I built it myself
I play alot of COD and UO. I have some friends and my cousin comes over for LAN parties at my house and we kill each other for hours with COD.
Fordguy - What do you think of BF2? I been thinking of picking it up and trying it out on my LAN.
on our lan, theres bout 14 computers. each bedroom has one, den, garage, and then theres about 8 or 9 in my computer room that are on it. the ones in the shop that are on the lan are for storage, and for different os's, and all do different things. theres alot of them in the base ment that are there but arent on the lan, cause of hub shortages.
