So I go to install the oil pan gasket on my 215 last night and something is definitely wrong. It's shrunk two sizes too small. I've read warnings about buying old cork gaskets but I thought this was new enough stock not to be a problem. Fortunately, I had just picked up a new gasket for my 223 and they are identical. That one fit perfectly and the cork was nice and soft. Is there any way to revitalize the dried out gasket? I'm guessing not.
I wouldn't use a dried out gasket, They get brittle. No way to rejuvenate either. Doing a job like the oil pan, why would you mess with taking a chance with an old gasket? Get a new one and you won't have to do the job over again.
.........and...........while stretched gaskets lasting longer than 4 hours is highly irregular, if this condition occurs a certified ASE Techician should be consulted
Fatfendered Ford has a good point here. I've noticed that when I soak my gaskets in Viagra, they tend to get really hard and expand (I knew we'd get here). I found that if you apply lubricant to the other surface, it makes the installation much easier. This method also applies to both large or small gaskets. LOL.....
