Yep, that's the sound my truck made last week. First day of vacation; about an hour into an eight-hour trip; marveling at how totally awesome the truck was running. 2005 F350 4x4 SuperCrew 6.0L w/ manual tranny, towing a 31-ft weekend warrior 5'er, up a hill on I-5, 65 mph on cruise control, 2500 rpm, 20 psi on the turbo, and 4800 miles on the engine. Holding steady. Sweet! Then all of a sudden..... BOOM!!!!! PPSSSSSSSTT! No power.
Of course, we just passed an offramp, and the next one was a few hills and a number of miles up the road. Pulled over as tight as possible to the side of a hill & Hubby crawled into the engine - found no loose hoses; no holes; no spewing fluids; and unfortunately..... no turbo boost!! Tried running without turbo - no go. Looked under the hood again, and 'lo and behold, a disconnected line running out of the turbo.
Funny thing is, the truck was just at the dealer two weeks prior for surging issues. The EBP valve was replaced at that time and it has been running great ever since. Hubby said the nut on the clamp for the line that blew was kinda mangled - like it wasn't put back on right after all the diagnostics from the valve replacement. So... the happy ending is that Hubby was able to reattach the line, tighen the nut, and we had no other problems on vacation. Whew. But, that darn hose is half way to blowing off again. Back to the dealer next week have them replace the hose, clamp & nut!! So frustrating !!!

My, oh my, you boys are TOO funny!!!! I'm still laughing out loud! So, a pretty common problem, eh? At least now I know what to tell the tech, instead of dragging Hubby down there to point at engine parts! Hee hee ! ~~~~~TrekChick
I'm sorry, we need to let people know which one's are providing poor service. Not installing a CAC tube properly could lead to a dangerous situation. The latest recall is based on a safety concern with the engines output, a drastic loss of power can lead to loosing control of the vehicle and it's load. Especially a big Tripple Axle Fifth Wheel like yours!
I tend to perform all my own maintenance. And I meticulousely inspect all of my work before driving. The techs at the dealership should have their own work inspected by another supervisor/tech. Just like we did when working on Navy Jets!
So, a word to the wise, Inspect the work of the technician when you get the truck back from the dealer service department. Make sure they do the work they said, and make sure it was done right before you take posession of the rig.
Just my two cents.. What was the name of that dealership?

The BOOM is enough to get your attention in the middle of the road. I noticed my 05 started making a noise like belts squeeling under heavy load and about 100 miles later ... BOOM!!!!! PPSSSSSSSTT!
a few thousand miles later I started getting the same noise, tightened up all the clamps and the noise went away, and no BOOM!!!!! PPSSSSSSSTT!.
I guess the clamps need to be checked and retightened on a regular basis
My 04 did the same thing while towing my tandem axle camper up a steap grade i cleaned the tube then replaced the hose and really cranked on the clamp and 15,000 miles later no problems
You probably qualify for the CAC replacement recall. If only Ford had'nt gone cheapo in the first place with the blow molded tube.
I'm in next week for replacement (2-16-04 build), not a moment too soon because mine leaks like a pig, and the only reason it has'nt departed yet is my light throttle foot.
I had heard ford went with the plastic tube due to heat. Metal pipes absorb heat from the engine, making the air charge hotter then it would be in a plastic pipe. So they replaced the metal pipe with a plastic pipe to reduce the temp of the air going into the engine. The cooler the air going into the engine the better. Its now the "trend" in performance cars to go with a plastic cold air tube over a metal for the same reasons.
we just got one of our early 04 f350's back from dealer for a recall on the engine wiring harness and the third trans recall and was informed that the turbo had gone sour but luckily it too is under recall. It did origanly blow off the intercoller hose and even blasted off the air resriction gauge on the air cleaner and definetly made noise but not as loud.
Had my c.a.c tube and clamps replaced, plastic tube and new clamps. Still leaked like hell on the cold side! They just replaced the pipe on my buddies 05 with a metal tube, no leaks so far on his, dont know about mine as some scum bag stole it!
