Yes, there are certain ones for certain trucks (engines). The one you will get will be for the 7.3PSD 1999-2003 (I do believe). I use the same one on my 2002. Only one truck can use the tuner at one time though.
The SCMT model 1705 will also work on earlier models of Power strokes, like 1996. It uses the VIN to identify the truck and puts in a program appropriate to it. The models without the intercooler, for example, will not get the same program or horsepower gain as the later models. as long as the tuner hasnt been used on your buddys truck it should work . iit was my understanding once it has been used on one truck cannot be used on another one.
