I Have A 2001 4wd Psd C-cab W/ A Old Style Micro Tuner (w/ Just Two Settings ) My Fuel Mileage Seems To Be Best In The Profomance Mode. I Dont Do Any Towing In This Mode Only In The Tow Safe Mode And Only About 8000 Lbs. My Question Is, Will Running This Tuner In The High Mode Only For Every Day Driving Damange My Engine? (high Exaust Gas Temp. I Have No Gages) Like I Said The High Setting Is Used For Every Day And Seems To Offer The Best Mileage.the Sales Rep Said When I Purchased It Sugested The High Mode For Economey Is This Correct?
Each truck acts a little differently, no matter how much they try and standardize the design. You might be getting away with it, or you might be heating your pistons up to the point of meltdown from each stoplight. You MUST have guages if you want to drive like that and expect your engine to last.
Or just play now and pay later.
Would It Be Better To Remove The Tuner Till I Can Install The Gages Or Run In The Tow Safe Mode Only? Is This Ond Style Unit Still A Good One I Know The Updated Oen Is Better But This One Seems To Work Fine For Now. I Do Plan To Install The Gages, I Just Did Not Know If Regular Driving Would Effect The Engine With The Tuner. No Racing Just Every Day Driving.....thanks For The Reply!
I ran a borrowed 1705 SCMT (3-stage) for a month w/o guages. Always towed in TowSafe, but I liked the better mileage of the HP setting for running empty. After I put in guages, I kicked my b*tt... Even in TowSafe, my EGT would climb north of 1250 on a minor grade w/ load. Guage or die, your choice...
Running TowSafe with no load doesn't appear to cause a high-temp condition. When I pull the Grapevine (6% for 12 miles) empty, EGT doesn't go over 1150. Loading up is when you'll see the high temps.

I've heard the "grapevine" before. Where is that? Just curious.
The "Grapevine" is a 40-mile stretch of I-5 running North from the L.A. basin. It climbs to a summit of 4144 ft. Not a trip for a truck with a fragile load, the road is beat to crap from all the truck traffic!!!

I run the old style micro tuner, in the 80hp mode, it gets better mileage with the 80hp installed, I have gauges installed , but have no problems pulling in the 80hp mode either.
Who has the best price on a gage package? is it a easy install?
We are running specials on gauge packages at the moment. Go to our site and check the autometer package we have. It includes everything you need to finish the install (Wire kit, painted pod, and full detailed online instructions).
PS: I would never run a diesel truck without true working gauges vs, factory idiot gauge lights. You could drive Hight EGT's even in a stock truck under special conditions 9one that I have seen was with a bad cat)
i only see high temps like 1200-1400 briefly, like when im pulling my 30' trailer, merging onto the interstate, buts only because im pushing the truck up to speed, as soon as i bck off the pedal, it comes down quickly, i run 75-80mph and run EGT's of about 875-900 with the 80hp chip installed
As long as you are running around town and not towing ANYTHING, you are fine. I ran that set-up for a year with gauges before stepping up to a flip chip and never saw too high EGT's. This was even making some serious WOT runs. It's when you start putting ANY weight in it, is when you will run into trouble. But, I would be getting some gauges if I were you. Better safe that sorry. Everyone will preach gauges and that is absolutely TRUE, but you will not see extreme EGT's with that set-up unless you are just trying to. Normal driving NAW.
