I"ve been reading about a plastic grommet that should be changed to brass, on the trottle body where the TV cable hooks up. my truck is 87 f150 4x4 AOD. I can't really see any grommet, I heard some ford trucks had a GM style hook up with no grommet. Is this grommet right at the end of the cable where the cable attaches to the trottle lever. I see where the cable goes through a square hole in the metal plate that holds the trottle and trans cable, thens theres a couple of inches to the end of the cable where it attaches to the trottle lever. can someone clarify this for me, or lead me to a picture or instructions to where this grommet is located.
thanks Randy
Not sure if your vehicle was prone to this. But it is at the end of cable where it attaches to throttle lever. The cable end fitting would fit into a nylon grommet. Over time the grommet would fail and TV cable would fall out. The grommet actually fit in the hole of throttle lever where the cable is attached.
the cable on mine goes through a plastic piece, that looks like it is clipped onto a ball stud, the piece doesn't look like it could be changed by itself, it looks like the whole cable would have to be changed. does this sound different from the grommet that they say to change to a brass one, anyone a pic of this or link to a picture
If the ball stud is on the throttle lever your in good shape. I don't know what engine u have. If its 351(5.8) then you are in good shape. I saw an excellent picture of this the other day and now I can't find it.
Maybe someone else can jump in to verify.
It sounds like your in good shape. I hear Ford changed to the rubber grommet sometime in 1987. Went a few years with it, then started seeing problems with it. They never had a recall, but a TSB on it. It wasn't just the truck either, it was on the cars too. Mostly the 302 w/ AOD. After a few years the grommet would deteriorate, become brittle, breakoff, and then TV cable would fall off. Without the TV cable attached it would burn up the transmission.
rclarke, we were just trying to figure out if mine had that grommet type, but mine looks to be different than the grommet replacement one, I was looking at the throttle end, mine has a plastic piece that hooks to a ball stud, mine must be early 87, 220-f-150 said they changed then sometime in 87
