Anyone here use their PSD 6.0 to plow snow?
How is it, any concerns or problems?
I currently debating the standard V8 or the PSD.
I read part of a post real early this morning, something about the torqshift transmission having problems. Cant find the exact link.
But im concerned about the whole thing with plowing snow and the constant back and forth of shifting gears. At 3 oclock in the morning I dont think im going to care much about stoping long enough to shift the transmission back into Drive.
Thinking about it for my current truck Ram2500 I usually shift into drive just before my "reverse stop" I dont stop then shift. (automatic transmission)
I think it would be ok but i wouldnt give it to much gas before it grabs. Going from rev to drive i have no lag but when i come home from work a 45min ride on the highway and i get to my spot at home and back in every night i always wait for it to grab when i go into reverse and sometimes it does take a good full 1.5sec doesnt sound like much but when you shift it and your sending fuel and it aint in gear fully it will jump. My personal TS is solid i havent had any problems yet and im at 38 or 39k right now in 18months. Hope that helps
When I plow snow (with a 87 F250 AOD automatic transmission) I ALWAYS come to a complete stop before switching gears. It is just common sense. It will DEFINETLY wear out your transmission prematurely.
Ya,I wouldn't want a manual when plowing snow. My ONE leg hurts enough after plowing for 24 hours, let alone TWO legs.
I saw a guy in a GMC plowing snow (in 4 low because there was so much). You should have smelled the clutch after he was done a parking lot. You would NEVER see me plowing with a manual (unless it was a BIG truck)
I plowed snow for several seasons in an older F250 with a NP435 4spd with a granny first gear. Granny gear is great for plowing. I use low range with my tractor moving dirt and snow. No abnormal clutch wear if driven properly.
I plow with my 7.3 and love it! My older truck 1993 Dodge 2500 w/ Cummins and 6speed manual man did that suck! Nothing like the smell of a smoking clutch at 2 AM!!
I think the 6.0 will plow fine. My last two trucks both manual trannys had plows (77 F-2504x4 460,96 F-3504x4 351W) I love plowing with the manual tranny nothing like granny low!! It does require a little learning with all that action going on up, down, angle, clutch, gear. I always used 4 Hi never had any early clutch failure. The only bad thing is reverse is so low that backing in a parking lot is much slower than the auto so you spend more time.
Good luck in whatever you get bottom line is it will plow snow no trouble.
The auto is easier but make sure you care for it don't club it in 20" storms and I say the 6Spd. will do just as well (Well I will see this winter I guess)

I plow with a 2005 F-350 with the V-10. It will push alot of snow. With the Torqueshift Transmission you have to be careful when going from forward to reverse. You have to wait a second or two when shifting in reverse. I plowed quit a bit of snow last winter and knock on wood I havent had any problems so far.
I never smell my clutch with my manual while plowing, yes I can plow for more than two days straight and still walk.
I have seen several dead auto trannies in Ford, Dodge and Chevys from plowing.
None of the rest of the guys I plow with have problems with their manuals either.
Yeah if you want to ruin a new torqshift it would be very easy to do so while plowing. I know you are supposed to come to a complete stop, but the torqshift seems so positive that if you dont stop things clash. The older 4spd auto it seemed like you could back up let off the gas, through it into gear then take off with no problems.
Does anyone notice in the morning when you first go to take off the truck wants to really go. I gotta have my foot hard on the brakes otherwise shes taken off.
We have two 6.0's that we plow with, both 550's. Other than the planetary's and snap rings they plow great. Have had a couple of the mystery downshifts in our '04. The '04 has had both recalls performed, even though it was not within the recall dates, so they tried telling us that we were abusing\shifting too quickly between F\R. This was at the exact same time that TS's were dropping like flies, I was not happy with that response. I was speaking with the tech that was rebuilding our's and he said there is a built in electronic delay in the TS that will not allow the shift to occur when motion is sensed on the output shaft.
This delay occurs in the 4R100's as well, not sure if it's supposed to. It totally changed my shifting habits when plowing--for the better. I wait a second or two before stepping on the gas, not to mention with a diesel you don't need to mat it to push snow.
Hopefully the problems are worked out, I am getting a late '05 later this week. I am going to be having an ATS transmission\TC\TransGo shift kit installed on the '05 sometime before winter, with upgraded snap ring. I do not trust this one at all.
