Has anyone else used this new technology? I just built a new computer and put one of these drives into it. I bought the BenQ drive (it cost me about $140 Canadian) and was well worth it. It is a CD/DVD ReWriter in one.
The LightScribe Technology is FANTASTIC. Basically you burn your data onto the CD/DVD then flip it over and it will "burn" a label onto the other side. Read more about it here: http://www.lightscribe.com/howlightscribeworks.aspx
Only downside is the cost of the media currently for DVD. The CD media is a fair enough price, but the cost of the DVD media to me is out of line. I can get 50 blank DVD discs for 10 to 15 bucks (US). Can only get 10 LightScribe DVD discs for that price.
It is cool, but will wait a bit longer for the media to come down in price.
A buddy of mine has a standalone unit that etches regular discs. IIRC Casio makes it and it works great. Burn your disc remove it from the PC then put it into the Casio gadget and presto....permanent label.
My buddy got one in the computer he built for his dad on father's day. I was very impressed with the labels it could do. It's so... manipulative.. heh heh heh... you could put lots of things on those labels!
Pro's Not going to be off balance, makes a label so you know what's on the dvd, fairly easy to find the disks (wally world)
cons, requires windows (unsure about mac, but I know you can't do it with Linux yet), takes a while to burn, expensive media, monochromatic, no known life expectancy, price still higher due to fewer manufacturers of it.
I have had friends that have tried the dvd's with the labels manufactured on them, and they seem to think this is currently the best option. I will stick with the marker for now and wait and see.
