What part is this??

This is in conjunction with a little repair job I'm doing - checking gaskets, block, etc. to address an oil leak. Can anyone tell me what the part in this picture is, http://home.mindspring.com/~jeffhend...rtfromscratch/ which is the canister-looking part with the frayed hose/line attached to it? To give you context, when one is looking up at the engine, from the front of car, from the ground, this thing seems to be just to the right of the oilpan. I've tried to locate this in my manuals, but don't see anything about it. I'm trying to figure out if the fact that my hose/line looks totally cooked, might have something to do with my problems. Thanks!
