Engine Removal
For those with experience removing an engine from a vehicle... or anyone with thoughts for that matter... here is my problem. I have the engine completly detatched from everything but the transmission. The engine is supported by the hoist, but will not slide away from the trans. I have 2 bolts removed connecting the trans. and block (am I missing one?). I have also removed 4 nuts connecting the torque converter plate. Do I need to rotate the engine to a specific location? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

What size motor you pullin? You might have to take a pry bar and pry the block from the bell... There are two pins on the block that go through holes in the bell... Sometimes ya have to pry, shake and jump up and down to separate them...lol Make sure there are no wires or anything in holding in the way

I'm not positive on a 5.8 but shouldn't there be 4(?) bolts holding the motor to the bell housing? There are two for sure way at the top. If you pull back the carpet at the tranny hump inside, there are 2 access panels that will let you get to those very easily. There should be 2 more bolts or more down the side(s) of the motor/bell housing. Am I missing something from your description of the problem? If so, and I just can't comprehend what you posted, my bad. Sorry.

Ya that is right. My 302 has 6 of them also. To get the two up top it is easiest to use some long extensions and look from the very back of the tranny to see them.

Well, thanks guys, I was looking for more bolts, but couldn't see them, should have been wearing my glasses I guess. Pulling the other bolts should make a difference.

The upper bell housing bolts are tough to remove with a ratchet wrench from the engine compartment. I used the box end of a combination wrench [with a pipe for leverage] to loosen and remove several of those bolts. Like the others pointed out, should be at least six bolts to remove.

Well, the engine is now sitting on a stand. Yes, there were 6 bolts, and no, I didn't have to go through the access hatch to get them. While that would have been the easiest way to do it, I would have had to rip up the carpet, which I wanted to avoid. A few extensions and an angle driver got the job done quite nicely. I now realize that having long lanky arms is not such a bad thing.
