Can I run the engine with my transmission pan removed and the valve body removed without damaging the engine? the trans is trashed anyway and has to come out, but I dont want something to jam suddenly in the transmission and bring the motor to a slamming halt! Its a 78 f150 with 351m motor and c6 transmission, 4x4 i have the front and rear driveshafts removed from the trans but the trans is still bolted to the engine, and like i said I took the pan off and the valve body (found out the trans is trashed) anyway let me know if you think I can run the engine with no problem...

i don't think it would damage the engine, as long as the torque convert will spin and not bind i think you'd be okay but idunno i have never tried it.

As long as the tranny is trash, you won't do any additional damage.
Just be prepared with a big pan underneath to catch the additional trans fluid that will dump out.

I was gonna ask that, but I kinda think I'm already getting known around here as an A-hole....

It's inevitable, really...but I was trying to hold it off for a bit.

Then don't start the engine! The pump is going to be running with no fluid. It's going to seize. Either parts will break, or the engine will slam to a stop, or both will happen.

You quoted Mike, but I wondered if you were referencing me, not that I'm offended. But I wasn't trying to be an a-hole, just curious as to why he would want to do it. He said the driveshafts were removed, so it wouldn't move. The only thing I could come up with is maybe he's doing something to the engine and needs to start it. I'd drop the trans, remove the t-case and converter and reinstall the trans, so he could mount the starter.

As it is, although the trans needs rebuilt, it has to be more valuable that way than totally thrashed.

You're right...I quoted the wrong post. I don't think it's an a-hole question ("Why?"), I guess I just didn't want to come on too strong. I was also trying to conjure up a scenario where you'd want to run your engine, even tho it can't take you anywhere.

Most people want to hear a engine run before they buy it...that is my guess anyway. So I bet F350 is selling the motor and the potential buyer wants to hear it run.

Jonnyuma you are not what you think you are. Meaning I do not think you are an $$@hole, for that ever that is worth. lol
