I just put in a re-manufactured 351W. Got the timing set at 7 degrees BTC, I'm running premium 93 octane gas. As soon as my temp guage gets to mid range or even a little under, the truck starts pinging under load. The truck will run on the cool side of normal unless I spend a lot of time idling or if I put on my A/C. Could I be running too lean? I've got an Edelbrock 600 cfm and I've never toyed with the settings.
Thanks,
Steve

Just have one ?. Is the carb new out of the box-the reason I ask, I had the same problem with a new 600 Elelbrock. There was some polishing wadding stuck in the float bowl! The way I came to the conclusion it was lean was to take her up a steep hill under steady pedal and pulled the choke(manual)-it ran just fine with about 1/4 choke. If you think this may be the problem-it's not to hard to get into the float bowls, about 9 screws on the top remove choke(elec.) and accelerator pump. Also, mine was set-up very lean out of the box. Yeah Steve,Chuck has a great point!Edelbrocks are sold as either economy or performance calibrated, depending on the part #.Did you try the dist. vacuum at both ports on the carb yet? Also check the pick up plate in the dist. to make sure it travels freely around the boss it mounts to. If that doesn't help some,go ahead and remove the top for inspection if you are up to it,or,ask for another one from your supplier.

Steve,
When I first got this thing runnin, I called Carter and they said "It'll run right out of the box but maybe not too good, it's up to you to set the floats etc. for your engine type". When I took off the top both floats wern't even close, so I had to set all the adjustments as in the book. I really didn't want to touch that but it ain't that bad. I used a dowel in a vise to hold the top to adjust the floats.

Moe
