If you are running your moter in its stock configuration, ther is no need to modify the breathing at all.But if you are looking for more HP and installing such aftermarket mods as headers,Cat back exhausts,K&N Filters, cams, chips, etc.,then you need to allow the engine to breath better, that is really the hole idea behind an aftermarket high flow air filter. The venturi affect tubes were installed to reduce the sound of air being slurped into your nice quiet stock engine, thats great for a nice quiet ride. But if you are trying to haul your boat up a steep grade and your motor is gasping for more air it doesnt do much good. Im not sure where yours are located, but its usually very simple to remove them.Keep in mind that there are some people who say that removing them adversely affects performance and that there are studies that show this.I have never seen or heard anything to back that up,on the contrary anyone that I have ever seen perform this mod has been pleased with the results, and personally I cant imagine anyone wanting to willfully cut the air flow to the motor almost in 1/2. Just going by experience it is an essential modification if you are hopping up your motor at all.Its cheap(free) its easy and it usually makes a noticeble improvement, just by itself.Maybe some others can comment either way.

I am planning on puting the K&N Cone filter on sometime. never actually heard about removing them, you were the first that told me about it
I am willing to here a little more noise, if I can get more MPG and Hp. I have the twin tubes that come from the throttle to the air box. Does that help?
They are actually located between the 2 sets of double tubes,(at least on the big block). The tubes exit the air box and then are connected to a plastic piece that joins the tubes attatched to the throttle body, they are usually located right inside that of hard plastic piece. If you remove the hoses from each side and look inside you will see a hard plastic funnel,(cutting the air volume almost in half),using a hack saw the funnels needs to be cut away, filed, and cleaned. Then simply re-install the plastic piece.Seems pretty simple ay! Remember that is on a Big Block and I dont have any manuals here to see if its the same on the 302 or 351,(or the I6).

I just finished taking off the tubes. I looked inside both ends and didn't see any "funnels". Can you shed some light on this? Maybe I was looking in the wrong area...
Did it look like someone may have removed them before you? Im afraid Im not that familliar with the parts location of the 302,I would think a speed shop or good auto parts store would be able to help you out.Good Luck
Jeff
I bought the truck new, and i don't think they were removed. Both ends are the same. The get larger to fit on the throttle and airbox. Weird maybe they arn't like that on small V-8's? thanks for the info. I will check that out
I was talking with a freind of mine(very good performance mechanic)today, while installing some"MORE" ignition mods on my truck. He mentioned that he thought they were located right at the air box.By the way the MSD in cab timing adjuster used with the 6 series ignition, and billet distributer is really a trick set up,and feels extremely strong,(But I am getting the Check Engine Light after full throttle launches),it goes away after about 30 seconds at idle?.Its always something.

Guy,
I have a 92 with the 300, I am going to look at mine on Monday and I will let you know what I found. Can't today, going to a Mustang/Ford show!!!
Todd
On Saturday I took the whole intake assembly apart, cleaned and examined the whole thing closely (dirt/mud had made its way up to the entrance of the twin intake tubes).
I did not find any venturi effect tubes nor did I find any indication where they might have existed and were removed.
However, the K&N drop-in filter I installed produced an immediate increase of 1.7 MPG around town.
I did the same as teo on Monday evening, found the same. Must be on bigger engines is all I can figure. I have had the K&N drop in for about 8000 miles now, was very surprised at how clean it still is.
Thanks for the info Teo and Todd. I won't bother looking for the "funnels" on my '91. I've been considering the K&N drop-in for a while now. Sounds like it's worth it.
Absolutely worth the $$. Not sure about price where you are, but mine ran $35 at Advance Auto, also Auto Zone was running $39, JCWhitney wanted $60 (I don't think so!) I am about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh PA. My deciding factor in buying one was not HP or MPG, but the fact that is is guaranteed for 10 years or 1 million miles! I was paying almost $7 for a paper filter every time I changed oil (twice a year) so this K&N will pay for itself in about 5 oil changes!
