I've got a 2002 Ranger Edge, 2wd, 3.0L V6, 5 speed manual transmisison with about 23,000 miles on it. I noticed that when I put the engine under a load, I get severe pinging ONLY between 2200 and 3000 rpm's. I've taken the truck back to my dealership about 5000 miles ago, and they "reset the PCM module". The day I drove the truck home, I noticed the pinging still occurred at the same location through acceleration. I took the truck in a second time, and there response was that I use 87 octane fuel (which is what I always use). I have tried running 89, but I still get pinging. I'm about to take the truck to the dealer and tell them to keep it until it's fixed properly....it's getting to the point where I'm going to try to use the Lemon Law if they can't get it running properly. I would appreciate any advice....thanks.
It's kinda hard to say that you should do this or do that. Pinging is a multi-dimensional problem because there are so many variables involved. So there's a whole bunch of stuff you can try to get rid of the pinging.
Take a look through this thread, it contains several links to various resources, tips and opinions on pinging, particularly with regard to the 3.0L:
