Anybody out there ever put a MSD or Mallory ignition system on a 300?? And if so, any benifits? Truck is a 92 4x4 with 90,000 mi. and I am just kicking around some ideas for horses and mpg's Also, is there anybody out there that makes a header for the 300?
Thanks
Say, I believe Clifford and Offenhauser make headers for the 4.9. Maybe Offenhauser only makes the intake. Follow some threads here they talk about split headers with dual exhausts and 4 bbl carbs. I used to have a 4.9 and swapped it for a 351W and slapped an MSD on it. MSD, Mallory, and Jacobs all (I think) use a multiple spark to fire the plugs giving a longer burn time which burns the fuel more efficiently. It's supposed to really help in the higher RPM range when a normal ignition misses firing some of the plugs. These new ignitions reduce those misses in the higher RPM ranges.
I have ordered the Clifford headers for my 93' F150 4x4 4.9L and I hopefully will see them in the next week or so. If anyone has opinions on Clifford or another manufacturer please share your thoughts. Here is the info for my order:

The MSD replaces the control module and gives the signal for multiple, rapid fire sparks, but I would change the coil to a high output which would also give you a "hotter" spark (more voltage).
I did some further research and decided on the MSD-6200 6A Ignitions System, and the 8227 MSD Blaster Coil, and Taylor SpiroPro Spark Plug Cables.
The guy at MSD said NOT to get any sort of trick spark plugs or platinum style. He said get the normal Motorcraft or Autolite and to make sure to get 1 level colder and increase the gap by .015 over normal.
Nice setup! I've got the same thing except I used the Taylor stainless steel covered wires which the MSD folks didn't like. I also ran a 42" coil wire to my coil mounted on the fender well which is supposed to be a no-no, but it works great and really looks nice and clean in the engine bay.
Looks like a did a no-no according to the MSD guys, but the only mods I've made to my 300/6 ignition are new Splitfire plugs, splitfire wires and a brass Wells cap and rotor. Seemed to smooth out the idle and give it a little more kick. I get 23mpg on the highway with the gate down and in OD. City driving is less but good.
MSD stands for Multiple Spark Discharge. A typical ignition will fire once per compression per cylinder at idle and at higher rpms, it is typical for an ignition not to fire each cylinder, each time around. MSD gives multiple sparks (up to 6) during each compression stroke at idle and, while it doesn't always fire each cylinder during each rotation of the rotor, it does increase the number of cylinders fired each time the rotor makes one complete revolution. This then gives you quicker start ups and increased hp across the entire rpm range.
