I HAVE AN 86 F150 4 SPEED MANUAL WITH A 300 6, IT HAS A TFI-IV IGNITION SYSTEM, IT ELECTRONICALLY ADVANCES, IT HAS A COMPUTER CONTROL BOX, UNDERNEATH THE DASH, THAT CONTROLS MANY OTHER THINGS BESIDES THE IGNITION, LIKE VACUUM RELAYS TO EMISSIONS EQUIPMENT. THE STOCK 1 BBL CARB ON IT HAS SEVERAL CONTROLS ON IT THAT FEEDBACK INFO TO THE COMPUTER. I PLAN ON PUTTING A 4 BBL INTAKE, WITH A HOLLEY 4BBL 390 CFM. AND HEADERS. BEING THAT THE AFTERMARKET CARB DOESNT FEEDBACK TO THE COMPUTER, LIKE THE ONE BBL DOES
I HAVE TO LEAVE THESE CONTROLS DICONNECTED, AND BEING I WONT BE RUNNING AN EGR VALVE OR THE THERMACTOR SYSTEM, I HAVE TO LEAVE THE VACUUM RELAYS DISCONNECTED, AND WITHOUT ALL THIS ##### HOOKED UP, THE MOTOR DOESNT ACCELERATE WORTH A #####, MY BEST ALTERNATIVE TO THIS, IS TO INSTALL AN EARLIER IGNITION SYSTEM WITHOUT COMPUTER CRAP.
MY QUESTION IS WHAT KIND OF IGNITION WOULD BE BEST
THE FOR DURASPARK II (WHICH HAS NO COMPUTER CONTOL) OR A POINTS DISTIBUTOR? AND HAVE MUCH TROUBLE WILL I HAVE RE-WIRING IT TO A DIFFERENT IGNITON?
I converted my '84 with a 300 six to the Duraspark II ignition. It had the same computer and emission garbage that yours has. You will have to buy the distributor, ignition box, coil, and dont forget the resistor for the coil. It is a pretty easy swap to do. Get the system for a '82 model. My truck has ran flawlessly since I installed it. On the driver side inner fender is where all your connections should be (at least they were on my '84), you will need to make a few jumpers or new connectors. The only problem I had was taking out the old distributor and installing the new one, it didn't want to cooperate with me. If you have any questions let me know and I'll help in any way I can.
I don't see an MSD distributor listed, but I don't believe you need an MSD distributor to run their ignition module. I know on my 351W, I'm running my stock Ford distributor with the MSD 6A ignition and adjustable timing module.

Well, yes and no! I'm from NC and took off the thermactor systems but kept the EGR (fairly simple system); dumped my big single cat and put on tre duals with 2 12" DynoMax cats. I've passed the emissions twice, but had to do a little explaining. The 2nd time they put on the emissions slip the the EGR and Smog Pump were N/A. Now let me tell you that you should not pass the visual inspection without the smog pump and I also had an open element air cleaner, which is also not legal smogwise. They never questioned me about it, but it depends on where you take your vehicle to get inspected. Try to find someone who is fair but not necessarily by the letter of the law. Technically, I couldn't even remove the old cat and place two cats in its place. I retarded my timing down to about 6 BDTC (mine is carberated) before I went in.
THANKS, I FIGURE IT WILL BE EASY TO HAVE I INSPECTED, BECAUSE I KNOW SOMEONE WHO PASSES INSPECTION EVERY YEAR, AND HE HAS NO CATS,
HIS TRUCK IS AN 83. SO IF HE PASSES INSPECTION, MAYBE I CAN, IF I GO TO THE SAME PERSON.
