Hello All,
I've got a 40 foot Elm tree right on my fence line. A couple of branches hang over the fence into the neighbors yard. I'm worried about liability should one of our micro burst winds topple some branches on the neighbors house. Anyone have a tree removed lately or trimmed down very small? I'm looking for a ballpark figure before I get estimates. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
XLRS
When you cut branches make sure the balance of the tree isn't too far off, like stripping one side only as the roots will have a strain. Get a trimmer that is insured and bonded. On the funny side I removed a 34" diameter Oak tree after boring 5 holes 1 1/4" diameter around the trunk, installed 2 1/2 pounds C-4. Tree gone, roots gone, windows gone as the house was 85 yards away the redwood house was imbeded with oak splinters. Damn that was a big bang!

Tree work prices are a wide range. It depends on if you can get a bucket truck to it or not. Also, what is below it? Just a rough price I would guess at around $600-700 or so if it had to be climbed.
You do not want to "cut it smaller". That is also known as topping. It will sprout out like crazy, especially since it is elm, and the tops will be weaker than before.
Either cut it down or just have it trimmed (thinned out, dead branches taken out and cleaned up so the wind can get through it better).
Most tree companies will give you a free estimate for removing the tree. Make sure the companies have liability insurance as well as insurance on their employees in case they get hurt.
Only get 2 or 3 estimates from REPUTABLE companies.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

P.S. Just so you know I have 13 years experience in the business until about 2 weeks ago.
Thanks for the replies. There is a "slat" wood fence below it. I'm sure it will need a climber. 6 to 7 hundred does'nt sound to bad. Guess I'll call tomorrow for some estimates. Thanks again.

Anything that you can do to make their job is easier is a benefit to you. If you can move that fence to make it easier then do it. If you can open a gate/section of fence so they can drag branches in a bigger opening, do it. Make sure you tell the guy that is giving the estimate so that he can maybe give you a deal.
In GA if a branch or tree falls it is considered an act of God and your only recourse is you get to keep the wood that landed on your side of the fence.

Just 2 and a 1/2 pounds? I would have used at least 5 pounds and video taped it for Amazing Videos or one of those other home video programs on t.v.
Back in the late 60's a friends parents had a cabin in Ben Lomond (north of Santa Cruz) California, it was a long wet winter and a 5' diameter redwood tree fell and cut the neighbors house in half. Act of God cost them $5,000 alone to remove the tree as well many court battles and lost neighbor friendship. Like stated above, thin so the wind will pass thru, hate to cut 'em down and wait 60 years to grow again, I don't have 60 years left before i'll take a "dirt nap" by then.

Ya, here in Canada (well at least Ontario) if I have a tree on my property and it fell into my neightbour's property then it is now his tree and he has to pay to clean it up. Not really a good deal but that's the way it goes.
Elm trees are not really nice anyways (they grow fast and are weak) plus they are prone to Dutch Elm disease and will be dead within one year of getting it. If it was my tree I would probably cut it down.
serriaben,
that was up on Mines road at the ranch in Livermore, we were going to use 5 to 8 pounds as a joke but with what we used the blast percussion was amazing as well the light from the blast. This was detonated at night. We had a old frig that was unplugged for years in the garage that had 83 sticks of 1958 dated dynamite, soaked them in water and later burned in the trash pit.
Me with igniters (blasting caps), gas, M16, C4, beer, and a idea will become a light show.

And Carl Sagan thought that the big bang therory was in outer space.
No way. It was in your neighborhood.
How cool was/is that?
I don't think I can get away with doing that here.
You'd see me on the 4, 5, 6, 10 and 11 o'clock news. LOL

So what happens if Mother Nature causes the destruction ?
sierraben,
the neighbor at the ranch has 1,700 acres, have seen wild turkey's many times on his land so "we did a hunt' with two M-16's on full auto. The neighbor calls us first if he hears any "strange noise", wonder why? The best one was his bull walked through a wire fence and had his way with the ladies. We had 43 head he had fun, after three weeks told the neighbor we'll send him home when done and patch the fence. We got a 11 pound turkey dressed out but it had a few bullet holes, yum, yum. Can't do that in the city.
