Does anyone know what causes the 4x4 High and 4x4 Low lights to blink during regular driving? Mine started doing that the other day, and I can't find anything on what causes it. Anyone had this happen to them?
My truck's got 164,000 miles on it, 4.0, shift on the fly, etc etc.
I think thy come on and off when there is something wrong with the electric 4x4 engaging motor in thetransfer case. My 95 Ranger has done this same thing. Try putting the truck in 4x4 high and 4x4 low and watching them.
My Ranger failed to make a slick, snow covered, winter hill one day in 2x4 then the 4x4 wouldn't turn on! I got stuck and ended up in the ditch because of it. Better check things out.
My 4x4 started working fine the next day....Go figure.....
The blinking light usually indicates a problem with the 4x4 engagement system. The primary 4WD components involved that are monitored for faults are (1) the transfer case, (2) the GEM module, and (3) the vehicle speed sensor. The GEM is the control unit for the 4WD system, it even stores special codes, but unfortunately you need a special scanner to pull them.
So I'd be thinking about those things, particularly the transfer case. If you do a search you will find some threads wherein it is discussed how to take off the TC motor and check to make sure it is operating OK. You can also look over the electrical connectors, etc.
