Engine and Transmission match up

Just bought a 65 f100. I was told that the engine is a 300 6-Cyl and that it has been replaced. The valve cover on the engine has a info plate with model code of 6x-274-01 and has e-10-rc also stamped on it. I assume that this is a much newer engine than 65? I have to replace the 4-speed tranny though and want to know what I should be looking for? Is there any way to tell approximate year from this information? I have searched several ways and haven't been able to find anything. Appreciate the help.

Sounds like a early 80's engine. You can use alot of thrannys from 65 thru late 80's. The NP 435 4 speed is the most common in use.

Is there any concern about what engine a transmission came off of. . .for clutch and I know that these transmissions would have fit several other engines. I looked on the side of the transmission in this truck tonight and I think that it has T18 stamped on the side, can't quite make it out for sure. If so, would a NP 435 work or would it have to be another T18?
